Wow, I think it has been almost 3 weeks since my last posting.  Life, work, sickness, and art have consumed me.  I am back on track though and have brought the good news that I GOT THE GRANT!
I have continued working on the series that the grant is for, but this just brings an extra boost to the process.  I found myself in the studio tonight being ( Read more... )

The grant was from the KY Foundation for Women. They were really specific in wanting connections to feminism and social change. Based on that and my current works theme I presented the idea of mother (earth) and environmentalism being linked with general views of motherhood. The writing is very focused on explaining my reasoning and the images I sent were an extension of this explanation. I gave them what I then considered the start of the series as well as other images that supported my idea.

If you would like, send me your e-mail address and I will send you a copy. I am assuming you are thinking of looking for a grant yourself?

I don't think I want to apply for anything. I am curious how you organized your thoughts and work.
What grants are like now, better I hope.
I received a CETA grant in the 70s to produce art work of the city of Norman.
It was very frustrating.
It was a committee, but they had no idea where things were to go.
Couldn't even tell me if it was to be outside or in, or how many to do? How much work was expected?
They said oh just make some stuff.
A friend who was a painter did a set of 15 Victorian Ladies, he thought that they were to be hung in waiting rooms at our hospital, but were rejected as hospital had rule that only allowed landscapes as pictures with people often disturbed family members who were waiting news of their loved one.
I don't think he ever found a place for them.
The problem became, as they were made for the city, we couldn't sell them,
I did four large outdoor abstract pieces, three could be used indoors, but only found home for one. I still have the three siting outside my home.

That sounds like a really crazy grant experience. The KFW.org gives grants for various arts and community efforts. They have been around for a long time but when then give you money it is strictly for whatever idea you have presented. They don't get product in return. They only ask for an ending report saying how you spent the money.

That makes more sense.
I assumed all grants would be similar to what I experienced.
I quit after 4 months as it was so frustrating.
Have a big order due mid Jan.
After that, I might think about a new project and ask to see you application.
Thank you for being so helpful.
Best wishes for a creative and prosperous New Year. : )

Actually your experience sounds a little more like a commission gone bad. Anyway, hope you have a good holiday and just let me know if you want to see my application.
