There is a Ouroboros (serpent/dragon biting it's own tail) surrounding the earth. It represents the cyclical nature of things, eternal return, and other things perceived as cycles that begin anew as soon as they end. I have used it here to refer to the potential break in the cycle of rejuvenation as the earth's oil reserves are depleted. I was thinking too about the old world maps which said "beyond here there be dragons", because the map makers had no idea what was out there, only that it was frightening. The unknown in their eye was potentially very dangerous.
