Friday. July 4th America's Independence Day-Just 236 years back (July 4th 1776). It is also the day Debbie's father died when he was 45. That reminded me of the day both America's second president John Adams and third president Thomas Jefferson died: (July 4th 1826). I and Debbie went to the movie Wall-E. One of the most fantastic movies ever made in animation. The whole movie is anthropomorphized but in a lovable way. :-)
This day reminded me of the two best books I read on American presidents: 1. David McCullough's John Adams which won the Pulitzer Prize and it is a huge tome of meticulous writing as like any of McCullough's other books the second book is American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson.
Many Americans would know that the Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, then only 33 years old, and ratified by American Congress to become the Independence Day. But not many would know that It was written on July 2nd and asked for changes in his writings (Jefferson accused King George of England for America's slavery.......).When Jefferson made the changes as per recommendations by John Adams and others it is approved on July 4th.
The beautiful friendship between this two great leaders is that they not only look opposite (Jefferson - tall, lanky; Adams - short and stout) but have different temperament (Jefferson- laconic, cunning; Adams - highly articulate, vain) and also different political beliefs especially later after Washington's death (Adams- Federalist & Jefferson- Democratic Republic).
This great long friendship between the wonderful and patriotic minds were split by their struggle for power. When Jefferson defeated the incumbent second president John Adams--Adams took off to his home in Massachusetts without even waiting to inaugurate Jefferson the next day. Hurt Adams and Jefferson didn't communicate for years but after many years when they become very old and close to death Adams resumed the friendship by writing a letter to his long time friend Jefferson. This started the broken friendship back and letters went back and forth between Quincy, Massachussets and Monticello,Virginia regularly. On July 2nd 1826 Adams fell sick in his home in Quincy, Massachussets and on July 4th 1826 when America is celebrating it's 50th Anniversary of Independence with fire works and cannon firing John Adams said "It's a great day,..." and his last words were "Thomas Jefferson survives" but Thomas Jefferson died just few hours before in his home in Virginia.
We also do "freeze somebody out" (as they say in Gilmore Girls- a TV sitcom) in life because of different reasons but have to resume the friendship when the time comes in this short life. Well in the movie Wall-E the humans resume their long (700 years) exile from the toxic Earth in outer space before reviving a wonderful life back in their home. I am trying hard. Are you ready to resume any broken friendship?
