Drew Carey and The Price Is Right

As a fan of The Price Is Right as long as I can remember, I was more than interested in who would be Bob Barker's successor. I had my preferences in game show veterans Todd Newton and Tom Bergeron (even though I'm not sure the latter was even a candidate), my hope-beyond-hope rejections with Rosie O'Donnell ( ( Read more... )

When I get in the mood to write, sometimes this is what happens.

The biggest advantage A-Rod has over Barry Bonds is that there is no steroid controversy surrounding him, which comforts a lot of fans. I'm no more or less thrilled about A-Rod passing Aaron than I am for Bonds, unless Rodriguez happens to be in a Cub uniform when he does it.

Sports until recently, has never been about being a role model; it's about talent. While the Falcons won't ever welcome Vick back (at least as long as their current ownership is in place), someone will sign him, even if he does go to jail. It's not the fact someone can play sports that gets him a pass, it's if he has extraordinary talent. The more you have, the more you can get away with and/or the more chances you get. This might change with Roger Goodell as commissioner, though.

I agree, there is no way TPIR with Drew Carey will be the same as it was with Bob Barker. To me, if Bob Barker didn't define the show the way he did, Drew Carey would be a lot easier to see as the host. Carey will definitely make the show more interesting to a different audience; of course, that may be counteracted by the turning off of some of TPIR's current audience. (Which, if I choose to be insensitive, is okay, because that part of the audience is on its last leg, anyway.) As far as the games, I can guarantee you they won't change them, because it takes them a while to create them in the first place. They may retire a couple, and they may change the names of a couple -- I can think of two of the top of my head that have "Barker's" in them -- but they aren't going anywhere.

I vaguely remember a nighttime version of TPIR. (Some call it "The New New Price Is Right", because Barker's version was the first "New" version. The original was somewhat different in play and hosted by Bill Cullen.) I know there was a half-hour version at some point, which is how long Barker's version was the first two or three years.
