This is in the same line as this entry on Culver's grilled chicken sandwich. Sorry again, Adam and Morgan!McDonald's. You know it, you're lovin' it. Or at least McDonald's thinks you do. The truth is, no one over thirteen loves McDonald's. We settle for McDonald's. We tolerate McDonald's. We all know McDonald's serves mediocre, egregiously ( Read more... )

The way I see it, if you're going to claim your food is great, then I expect it to be great. I talked about the McChicken sandwich. It's a dollar. I don't expect it to be great, and it isn't. But it's not bad. It's worth the money you spend on it.

The classic "premium chicken sandwich" I had was $3.29. (The club and ranch were $3.69.) For that much, I expect it to be that much better than a $0.99 sandwich. It wasn't. Three McChickens would have been a much better use of my money.

I'm not harsh on McDonald's because I worked there. I've had the McGriddles once, it was pretty good. (In fact, I think McDonald's is a good quick choice for breakfast, even though I think Burger King's better. I worked at Burger King, too, you remember.) I'm harsh on McDonald's because they seem to be laboring under the impression (or tricking people into believing, take your pick) their food is good when in fact almost all their competitors do something, if not everything they do better.

Not many fast food restaurants advertise themselves as anything much more than fast food restaurants. They know I'm not coming for a gustatorial extravaganza, I'm just coming for a quick half-decent lunch. If they can pull that off, I'm happy. But when you say "come and get 'sit down' restaurant quality at fast-food speed and price," though I know full well it's not going to be so, I still hold the restaurant to their claim. Yes, I know, I'm setting myself up for disappointment, but maybe, like when I had the Whatachicken, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
