It seems like I'm on a posting roll today, I'm afraid! Whilst I'm here, I'll just drop in a quick reminder that I shall be travelling to London next wednesday (3rd Oct), so if you are interested in meeting up, please let me know!
Browsing my normal news websites, I came across
a test of in-car pay-as-you-go systems, taxing you per mile driven.
Sure I do not need to point out:
- The majority of car journeys are short trips
- The shorter the journey, the slower the average speed and the worse the fuel consumption
- The worse the fuel efficiency, the greater the environmental damage
- Such short journeys are those best replaced by exercise or the use of public transport
- Short journeys within towns are the major source of traffic congestion, with long-distance routes typically being less congested and more easily upgraded to deal with greater loads
To tax people per raw mile driven would only discourage people from taking the longer, more car-essential journeys and do absolutely nothing to reduce local congestion and pollution people taking small, replaceable trips.
