BC Afternoon Play - Good Evening

May 06, 2011 09:06

The playwright Roy Smiles, who has carved out something of a niche by imagining himself into the lives of real people, hits the radio jackpot with this masterfully crafted tribute to Alan Bennett, Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller and Dudley Moore - the young Turks of the Satire boom. It's the Sixties; Beyond the Fringe is an enormous success in London, and now America calls. Unfortunately Bennett doesn't want to know. There's nothing for him in America. It's not the action that matters, though, but the way in which Smiles brings out the characters of each brilliant young man, aided by some fine acting (Benedict Cumberbatch, above, outstanding as Moore) and some brilliant rewriting of well-known sketches - watch out for the pastiches of the abuse thrown at a bemused Harold Macmillan when he came to see Beyond the Fringe, and an imagined conversation between Moore and his pleb father that mirrors a Pete and Dud sketch in later years.
