Summary: It was Sam’s birthday and she was waiting for someone’s message.
A/N: Like mentioned, this is my first OC fanfic. Specially wrote this for samdek95 18th birthday. I love you, dear.

It was a normal day for most of us: students, who had lectures to attend, went for it; adults, who had to turn up at work, went for it. However, it was a special day for a girl who lives in somewhere in United Kingdom.

As Sam opened her eyes, the first thought popped into her head, “I’m finally Eighteen… I feel old.” Sam chuckled and stared at the calendar at her bed side, the plain black and white desktop calendar which was flipped to the month: April. On a specific date, it was filled with tiny cake stickers. Twenty-fifth April was her day.

Sam groaned as she removed the blanket from her legs and slide off the bed. Slipping into her slippers, she casually grabbed her phone which was by the calendar. She had switched her phone to silent mode the night before as she knew she would be spammed with messages. True enough, there were thirty over messages, hundreds of Facebook notifications and a handful of Whatsapp messages. She scrolled through the notifications on her phone and left it on its own, as though she was expecting a message from someone special and it didn’t come.

“I don’t know if I should feel loved or hate them for spamming me…” Sam chuckled as she placed her phone back by the calendar and walked towards her closet. She picked out her school uniform and headed to her personal toilet to freshen up for school.

Fifteen minutes later, she stepped out of the toilet; fully dressed and freshened up. Sam walked back to her bed and picked up her phone, “Still no message?” Sam sighed as she reached out for her bag by her study table and headed down for breakfast.

“Good morning, Mom.” Sam chirped as she sat in front of her bowl of cereals. She noticed there were additional fruits in her bowl, which were probably something special her mother had prepared for her that morning.

“Happy 18th birthday, dear.” Sam’s mother kissed her daughter’s head as she sat beside her daughter and took her breakfast.

“”Your dad left earlier this morning to work, but he did tell me to wish you Happy Birthday,” Sam’s mother smiled at her as she drank her freshly brewed English Breakfast Tea.

Before Sam could reply, the doorbell rang and her mother got up to check out who the visitor was.

“Ah, Min! Good morning, dear! Have you eaten your breakfast? Come in!” Sam’s mother ushered Min, Sam’s best friend, into the house.

“Good morning, aunty. I’ve eaten my breakfast! I’m here to walk to school with Sam! Is she done?” Min walked into the kitchen and noticed that Sam was busy typing on the phone. Using the chance that her friend was distracted, Min pounced onto Sam’s back and gave her a hug; not forgetting to yell, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!”

Thankfully, Sam was done with her breakfast or Min would have choked her from whatever she was eating. “Hey! You scared me!” Sam smacked Min’s arm as the latter removed them from Sam’s body and sat beside the birthday girl, “still, thanks!” They exchanged a small hug and Sam turned her attention back to her phone when they were done.

“Don’t you want your present???” Min shook the paper bag in her hand, right in front of Sam’s head. Sam, being too occupied with her phone, replied, “Nah, I know you got me merchandise from my favourite band, Super Junior.” Min snatched back the bag and peeped into the fully wrapped album that was in the plain, brown paper bag. Was it so obvious?

Min noticed Sam was aimlessly scrolling through her messages. She knew what Sam was waiting for and decided to tease the girl, “still no message from him?” Sam glared back at Min, frantically turning her head around to make sure her mother didn’t hear what Min had just said. Sam threw Min a death glare as she grabbed her bag and announced to her mother that she was heading to school with Min.

Once they were out of the house, Sam whacked Min once again.

“Shhh! What if my mother heard you! Do you have to make it so obvious?” Sam scolded Min as they continued walking to their destination, college.

“Do you have to make it so obvious? You were checking your phone in the open! What if your parents were to appear behind you and see that you are messaging Jerome?” Min questioned her back and wiggled her brows.

“Yah! I-I wasn’t messaging Jer-Jerome, okay! I was-was replying to all my birthday wishes on Facebook!” Sam argued back as she pushed Min onto the grass.

“I’m sure~” Min continued teasing Sam and dragged her down onto the grass patch.

“I’m not lying!” Sam raised her arms in the air and showed Min her phone, “he didn’t even wish me Happy Birthday… No email, no Whatsapp…” Sam looked down onto her shoes as she continued walking.

“Hey, come on! I’m sure it is because of the different timezone you two live in! We are living in GMT+1 while he is in GMT+9. You can’t blame him since it is… six in the evening there. He might be having dinner!” Min tried consoling Sam as she interlocked their arms together.

“Come on~ No one asked you to get a boyfriend who lives almost at the other end of the world!” Min nudged Sam and pulled her towards their group of friends who were waiting for them by the gate, “You’ve still got a long day to enjoy! Don’t sulk, birthday girl!”

“He isn’t my boyfriend, Min!”

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

~~~
When school ended that afternoon, around four, Sam had bags of gifts around her arms; balloons tied around her bag and even had Min to be her personal maid for that day.
“I’m only doing this because it is your birthday…” Min grumbled as she shifted the bags in her hands to get into a more comfortable position.
“You know I love you, Min.” Sam cheekily smiled back.
“Ugh, I don’t. Why can’t you get your boyfriend here to be your servant!” Min whined and followed Sam back to her house. They were going to prepare for Sam’s party that night.
“He isn’t my boyfriend!! I don’t even know how he looks like!” Sam exclaimed. It was true. Sam never knew how Jerome looked like. How could we be attached?
“You don’t have to know how he looks like to be with him. So superficial.” Min continued teasing Sam and ran ahead of her.
“Hey! Who’s superficial! I don’t even know how he looks like but I like him, okay!” Sam argued back and chased after Min.
Min stopped running and turned around immediately, causing Sam to collide into her. The items on Sam’s hands dropped onto the floor and Sam could only scold her playful friend.
“So you admit that you like him!!” Min squatted in front of Sam and cheered; giving her the smile.
“I never said I didn’t….” Sam got up and continued walking, trying to hide the blush on her face.
“Alright, alright. I will stop teasing you. It’s really amazing how you two have been chatting for over a year, yet you don’t know how he looks like… He even sent you so many gifts! All your favourite Super Junior albums from Korea, and they are even signed!”
“He says he don’t see a need in revealing his looks to me… See, I’m not superficial in that sense. Anyways, I like how he is so innocent and so genuine about his feelings. I can always feel the sincerity when he tries to comfort me from a bad day, or when he is confiding in me about his problems. I can see that he really trust me… Why would I need to know how he looks like if he holds such qualities?” Sam continued convincing Min and herself as they walked back home.
Jerome is an online friend that Sam met about a year ago from an online chat site, Omegle. Everyone would say that Omegle is a dangerous site as people in there were only interested in sex and hooking up with random people to pacify their sexual cravings. Probably that’s why she’s afraid to let her parents know about Jerome’s existence.
That night that Sam had met Jerome on Omegle, she didn’t actually have the intention of doing so. She was initially tumblr-ing, searching for more Super Junior pictures to save into her collection. She so happened to chance upon a post that was joking about how coincidental and lucky a fan would be if they were to meet their idols online on a chatting site without knowing that they are speaking to their idols. She laughed at how fans could have such vivid ideas and knew that the chances were as close to zero. She ignored the post and eventually proceeded with the more interesting pictures.
Just as Sam was scrolling through the posts, she noticed an advertisement on the side of the page.
Omgele: Talk to Strangers
“Omgele?” Sam thought to herself for a minute, trying to remember where she heard that name from. It then came to her mind that it was the site that everyone in school was playing with, that online chat room that allows you to meet people from all over the world.
Curiosity got the better of her and Sam decided to click onto the link.
I wonder what’s so interesting about this that got all the people so hooked up.
Sam met a couple of weird people who were asking for ASL; basically Age, Sex (Gender) and Location. She knew immediately close those chat as she felt that she didn’t want to reveal much about herself. After all, who knows what they would do? Hack your IP address?
It was after ten minutes; when Sam was about to log off from the site, when she decided to give the site one last chance. She was somehow hoping that there would be someone in Omegle that would be decent to chat with, and not someone that wanted sexual pleasures.
Lucky enough, she met Jerome.
~~~

After speaking to Jerome that night, they had exchanged their emails to continue chatting as they realised that they had many things in common. From emails to Kakao IDs, from names to personal problems, Jerome and Sam eventually developed a strong mutual friendship towards each other. Even without knowing much personal information of Jerome, Sam felt assured with the limited information she knew about Jerome.

Initially, when Min first found out about this “penpal”, she was worried that Jerome was out to con her. However, after reading a few of their exchanged email, she could see that Jerome means to harm to Sam; but she continued looking out for Sam, just in case he was a sneaky bastard.

A year past, Jerome and Sam eventually became very close; to the point that Min felt that Sam was dating him. Min often thought that Sam is stupid to date a guy without knowing him completely and once took Sam’s phone to ask for Jerome’s identification.

What shocked Min and Sam was Jerome’s calm reply, “You know me well enough, I revolve around your life everyday…”

Until now, they don’t understand what Jerome meant.

It was an hour before the end of the day. Sam’s party had just ended as it was a school night. Bidding farewell with her friends, Min and her cleared up the mess that was created. Min had decided to stay over that night.

“Still no news from him?” Min enquired as she picked up the empty cans on the carpeted ground.

Sam shook her head and grabbed her phone from the table to double check, “nope.”

They continued to clear the mess. Thank god Sam’s parents were quite open-minded and didn’t mind having a party in their basement, with the condition that it will be cleared up by morning.

By the time the two girls finished clearing up the basement, returning it to its original glory, it was twenty minutes to twelve. Both of them slammed their tired bodies onto the couch and Sam reached out for her phone again.

“I really think he forgot about my birthday, or even me…” Sam whispered.

“No! I think he’s just busy… Didn’t he tell you that he would be busy this week?” Min comforted her best friend and leaned on her shoulder to give her some support.

“Yeah… but he should still be able to drop a text or something…” Sam continued scrolling through their conversation from the night before. At that moment, a text came in.

To: Sam
From: Jerome

I need you to take a picture of the exterior of your house for my project… Can you do it for me now?

“What the hell?” Sam exclaimed as she read the latest message. Nosy parker, Min, poked her head to check out what Jerome had sent Sam.

“Lol, wow…. Erm… I told you he was busy!” Min tried to reassure her best friend and pulled her up from the sofa.

“Come on, let’s help him with that project… Maybe he would be able to talk to you once he is done!” Min dragged her up the stairs and pushed her to the front door.

“Alright… Only because he rarely ask me for favours and he is always helping me…” Sam pouted and slipped on her coat by the rack beside the door.

“Wait for me! Mine is in the living room!” Min ran off to grab her coat from the living room. Even though it was a short while, it was still relatively cold and they didn’t want to catch a cold.

“It’s so flipping cold! I don’t--”

“What’s wrong, Sam?” Min ran out of the living room as she heard a loud thud.

Before Sam could continue with her whines about the cold weather, she met a familiar stranger in front of her door. She was speechless. Her mind was malfunctioning and she was unsure if it was a dream.

“Sam!! Isn’t he that guy that’s pasted all around your room???? That turtle boy that you were spazzing about??” Min stared at the man standing in front of them and tried poking her waist from the back to bring her back to her sense.

“Ye-Yesung…” That was the only word that Sam would voice out before she was grabbed into a tight hug.

“Happy Birthday, Sam… I’m sorry that I’m wishing you so late, but I hope I would be the last to wish you because I want to be the last person that will ever forget you.” Yesung whispered into Sam’s right ear, “I hope I’m not too late though. I was busy shooting this morning and I flew here immediately after the photoshoot.”

Even after Yesung had released Sam from his arms, she was still dumbfounded and could only stare at his flawless face…

“How… Oh my god… I think I’m dreaming… Min… I see Yesung…” Sam uttered.

Yesung chuckled at her reaction and reached out for her hands, “No, silly. I’m real.”

Letting go of her hand, Yesung took a step back and smirked at her.

“Oh, let me formally introduce myself to you. My name is Jerome Kim, Kim Jongwoon; or also known as Yesung. Nice to meet you, Artica darling.”
