the decision to pre-order the deluxe edition of "challengers" by the new pornographers was not one that i regret in the slightest. i have access to the album's stream and soon, access to exclusive b-sides, live content, and tour pre-sales.
this one will surely be in my top five at the end of the year. it's too solid to avoid that. i mean, "twin cinema" was my favorite of 2005, so i'm slightly biased..but, man, "myriad harbour" is one of the best things dan bejar has ever created (including his prolific work with destroyer), "failsafe" utilizes kathryn's vocals brilliantly over elegant tremolo guitar, and "unguided," a.c. newman's long-anticipated first "epic" (>4 minute or so) song, turned out to be fascinating. it's not as immediate as "twin cinema," but i am entirely certain this one will grow on me. the melodies are more complex, the subject matter more layered and oblique, the intrigue increased.
