Summary:
Went to see the Gary Numan concert tonight with Skulde13 and bobgenghiskhan and we just got home. What a strange experience. First, we get there, and I find out the opening band (New Skin)is one I actually know a song by (Cherry Flowers and Bedroom Songs) and have been interested in checking out (they were pretty good, BTW). I talked with the singer of New Skin later (she was very excited I knew one of their songs) and reccommended they get in touch with Scary Lady Sarah. Somehow, I've taken over drl909's role of getting bands together with promoters . . .
While we are getting our T-Shirts, I feel a poke on my shoulder. My neighbor from when I was living in Lombard, Robert, was there, and we caught up a bit. Then, I spotted four other people I know from the Goth meetup group we go to once a month, so I stopped by and said "Hi" to them. I also saw another guy who looked vaguely familiar, and settled in for the show. We ended up talking to many of the people around us, and everyone seemed really nice.
Gary Numan was great- although he didn't play even Close to everything I wanted to hear; his set focused a lot on his newer material which was very good, and much heavier than I expected. I did, however, get (among other things), "Metal", "Black Box", "Cars" (an almost industrial version - very heavy), A really good version of "Down In The Park", a heavily arranged but very cool version of "Are 'Friends' Electric", and "Dark" (one of My favorite songs by him).
Unfortunately, I didn't get "M.E.", "Dead Heaven", "We are Glass", "We're So Fragile", "I Die, You Die", "Dominion Day", or "Absolution", but drl909 always says I whine too much about what isn't played in the set list, anyhow.
Everyone was really nice in the crowd- at one point a redhead asked if she and her friend could get by. I said, "no problem", and let them slide by. This is why I thought it was odd when later on, they were pushing against Aimee, and she wasn't moving (she had somehow gotten a little bit ahead of me in the concert).
The show lets out and I ran into the guy who looked vaguely familiar. He points at me and gives a questioning look for about a second before it both dawns on us who each other are. Almost simultaneously, we both exclaim, "I met you at Flashback Weekend!" (The horror con Skulde13 and I went to a couple of weeks back). We started talking, and heard that Gary Numan apparently makes a habit of making himself somewhat available to meet fans after the show. One guy I was talking with said that he talked with Gary Numan for 20 minutes or so after a show about three weeks ago.
So, against my better judgement, I decide to stick around for a bit. We waited in the lobby of the HOB for a while, but soon noticed other waiting fans circling outside to the side of the building, on top of the grate above the parking garage which had Gary Numan's van parked directly below. We waited there for another half hour or so, and Bobgenghiskhan decided to go home, as it looked like he wasn't coming after all. We opted to wait a little longer. Most of the people went across the street to the parking lot. After another few minutes, I heard voice from the grate and we realized those people had gotten down by the tour bus. On a hunch, I checked across the street and founs that there was an "underpass area" that led below the HOB. After dodging a couple of cat sized rats (no exaggeration), we went below, and found the whole band (except Gary) signing autographs, taking pictures, and shaking hands.
Looking over, I saw Gary behind a line of people, and we got in line to meet him, when who should come over but - the red haired woman who had been pushing aginst Skulde13 in the club - she apologized for doing that, explaining that she had been pushed into Skulde13 by a drunk woman who was three sheets to the wind. Turns out it wasn't her fault. She apparently was the Girlfriend of one of the Guys in New Skin, and turned out be quite nice. Just goes to show, all things aren't as they appear to be on the surface! From there we met Gary Numan, who was incredibly gracious to his fans, signing autographs (we got our T-shirt, and Audio Programme signed), shaking hands, and taking pictures (another pair of gracious fans took our picture with him and are going to send it to us). He probably stayed a good hour after the show, just to make sure he met all the fans who wanted to meet him. When any band does this, it raises my opinion of them considerably in my book.
We also met the guy who runs the Gary Numan North America Fan Club site, who said he'd put Skulde13 on his site, if she went through with her plan of doing the whole Wayne's World, "We're not Worthy!" bit (she did - Gary Numan got a chuckle out of it). I told him next tour, she really wanted to hear "M.E."
After saying goodbye to the band and waiting for them to leave, and daying bye to the other fans, we started towards home, when skulde13 started crying. I didn't realize it at the time, but it actually gave us an adrenaline rush when we met him. I didn't feel it at the time, but I felt the comedown. So, now we're home, Skulde13 is still excited that she met one of her favorite artists, and I'm tired and ready for a sandwich. We'll definitely have to see him next time he comes to town.
