Wednesday-
Breakfast/lunch, readying, then right off to a plantation. Not necessarily my favorite activity, since I’ve been to things like this before. It was also the hottest day of the year so far, in the hottest part of the day, in a hot part of the country. The plantation had a petting zoo, which was fun. The house was nice. We noticed it has a set of old Darwin books, right next to the holy bible. Some of the woodwork was incredible, like the cherrywood desk. The gardens were basically a swamp with paths. Some nice flowers, and a hedge maze. Finally, we were off to the final leg of the plantation, the real swamp. Little ground, mostly raised wooden paths. Interesting trees, some cool animals. I was already hot, hungry, and had a headache, and wanted to leave. The plantation took about five hours.
Afterwards, we went to the Lindvig parents’ rental home for dinner. They made roast and lasagna, along with sides. Delicious. Beer etc. was handed out freely. We chilled there for a bit, then finally went back home. We did a bit of late night swimming, and Bikkle lost a pair of pants. I don’t know why anyone brought anything extra with them.
Thursday-
Aquarium trip. Nobody really wanted to go, but Stan and Bikkle had people to meet, and left without us. Finally, we all decided to go. It was worth going, although a bit expensive. I bought a little something for Leah at the giftshop. I really liked the hands-on exhibit; now I want a small crab of my own.
Next we went downtown to pick up some vests for the wedding. It seems there is a rainbow theme, and all the groomsmen are wearing colored vests. At the men’s formalwear shop, I found a beautiful umbrella for $40. I thought we were going for dinner next, but no, we went to an open market. While nice, it was all generally overpriced trinkets, so I bought none of it. There was some reasonably priced flavored ice, however. I got banana.
Home, then dinner. A walk to downtown Folly Beach led us to the Shacktastic Crab, or some such name. I got fish and shrimp. Overpriced, but tasty. On the way back, it started to rain, then downpour. It had been storming all week, and raining on and off. We happened to catch it at a bad time. Eventually, we ran. Thorin and I booked it the entire way on a full stomach. Not pleasant. We were supposed to go out to downtown Charleston afterwards for bachelor/bachelorette party, but the storm was too much. We stayed at home and drank. Stan wanted a game, so Pat thought of “team drinking.” It was a bit too much for Pat, and all of us for that matter. At some point during the night, once many were starting to go to sleep, Thorin and I took a walk to the beach, stood in the ocean for a while. It was nice. Then sleep.
Friday-
The plan was a dinner with all the family and friends so far to show up, at 4. We wanted some beach time, so we went off as early as we could. I realized that, at some point the day before, I shredded my left ankle a bit and got a huge cut on the ball of my right foot. Not enough to bleed, but enough to cut all the way through the callus to the tender flesh underneath. I glued it shut with superglue (which is still holding, more than 24 hours later!). After the storm, the wind was still high, and the waves were exciting. We played some foursquare.
Dinner was Italian. Spicy sausage and a glass of red wine for me. Pat was feeling terrible from the night before (still) and had nothing. Chocolate hazelnut gelato to finish off the dinner. After dinner, we were back to the beach. Storms were brewing again, and the waves were even more extreme. Found the perfect spot: a sandbar out a ways, where the big waves would crash in. They were huge, and powerful, enough to whip me around, send me back fifteen feet or more. It was cloudy, no sunscreen really needed. Right before we left this time, I did some body surfing on some low waves. Enjoyable.
Finally back, we cleaned up the place for the guests tomorrow. Later, some went out to the Folly Beach downtown to check out bars, others stayed to drink and chat. I joined the chatters eventually. Cigars were brought out. Eventually, I got tired, fell asleep on the couch.
