1.

Arthur, crown prince of Camelot, is in peril. Again.

With a low moan, the prince shudders as the giant spider web keeps him locked tight in its painful embrace (the webs are magicked to induce incredible pain the more the victim moves). "Save yourself," he says, voice low. The giant spider is descending at an infinitesimally slow pace; she's got her prey right where she wants him.

Merlin sighs, leans back on his heels, and contemplates not saving him. Like, life would be a lot easier without the big prat and the dragon who's always blathering on about their Epic Destiny of Togetherness is a giant douchebag, anyway, so.

Jerking again, Arthur lets out a breathy gasp. Merlin is surprised by this; Arthur is trained daily on how to withstand pain. "Leave me," Arthur says.

Locking his eyes on his liege lord's, he feels a tightness in his chest that has nothing to do with the situation, or his own fear that the spider will trap him before he can act.

Holding himself still, Merlin speaks the words and the web disintegrates into a sparkly sort of dust, filling the room and the air. Arthur falls to the ground and his vision is clouded as Merlin raises his fist and twists it in the air, his magic destroying the spider in a heart beat.

He coughs, and he holds out his hand for Arthur.

The prince looks up at him, bewildered, and passes out.

2.

When Arthur grabs his ass, Merlin finally puts it together that the evil witch Grizelda has switched bodies with the prince.

"Oh," he says and changes tactics.

There are three things Merlin thinks about all the time. One is how Arthur will react to finding out that his manservant is a wizard and will he want to kill him or not. Two is how is it that he always seems to be saving Arthur with magic and Arthur never figures it out, is he really that big of an idiot? And three is exactly how Arthur's mouth tastes when kissed.

Arthur's mouth tastes like magic and vanilla when he's possessed by pure evil, Merlin discovers, and is almost distracted when Arthur's tongue slides along his lower lip. Almost.

He pulls away, his eyes golden and ancient words on his swollen lips.

Having been distracted with kisses, the witch is unable to defend herself and quickly leaves the prince's body, soon to be trapped in a vase across the room. Merlin has half a moment to steady himself before Arthur blinks at him (whole and complete in his body).

"Why do my lips tingle?" the prince asks. Merlin shrugs.

3.

The leprechaun laughs in a high voice and dashes away from Arthur. "You can never catch me!" he squeals.

Merlin lags behind, watching Arthur run after the tiny man. Arthur, winded, looks peevishly back at him. "Keep up! If we don't catch him, Camelot will be destroyed!" he yells, before continuing the chase.

Checking the state of his ragged fingernails, Merlin ponders the next step and then wriggles his fingers.

The leprechaun trips over a suddenly-appearing tree branch and says some very nasty words when he's hoisted into the air by his ankle by Arthur.

Arthur looks over at Merlin and beams. "I got him!" he says, intelligently.

4.

It's been a week since Merlin lost Arthur to Mordred's spell. Lingering indefinitely in fitful sleep, the prince lays feverish in his bed, deaf to the world.

"We've been here before," Merlin says to Gwen, who looks shaken.

"I don't know what to do," Merlin says to Gaius, who looks shaken.

"You're useless. Again," Merlin says to the dragon, who looks bored.

"You can't die," Merlin says to Arthur, who shivers in his sleep. "I won't let you."

It takes him a while, a lot longer than he hoped, but he figures it out, and beats the spell with a mix of ancient magic and a relic from Scandinavia. Mordred sends him a nasty note in response, but Merlin's too happy to see Arthur glare at him and order him to clean out the neglected stables to care.

5.

The neighboring kingdom is attacking at dawn. From one of the castle towers, Merlin watches them prepare. Arthur's at his side, gripping the railing. The enemy outnumbers them by thousands, and they have trolls, giants, and three young sorcerers leading them. They've ravished and plundered three kingdoms already (warm ups) before planning an attack on Camelot. Merlin's pretty certain that they're doomed.

Arthur turns to face him, and Merlin can tell in his eyes that the prince has a plan, a new one. A plan that will save them all. Merlin's pretty certain that they're still doomed. "We're not going to die," the prince says at last.

Merlin nods. It seems like an appropriate reaction.

Arthur pauses and then touches Merlin's arm. "We're not going to die because you're going to stop them."

Blinking, Merlin tilts his head and looks carefully at his prince. "Excuse me?"

Arthur's grip becomes tight on his arm. "As if I didn't know."

Merlin thinks two thoughts at once: (1) extreme, extreme incoherent panic and (2) exactly what spell would destroy the army outside. It'll be messy, and obvious that magic's involved, but it will do the trick.

"I have no idea what you mean, your highness."

Shaking his head, Arthur pulls Merlin closer to him and his lips are smiling just a little. Merlin can't breathe. He's going to die. But most likely from embarrassment.

Arthur lifts his hand and smacks him firmly on the cheek. "That's for not trusting me." He slaps him again. "That's for thinking I couldn't handle the truth."

Merlin's cheek burns, but the slap wasn't that-

Arthur leans in and brushes his lips against Merlin's. It's a chaste, brotherly kiss. Merlin can't feel anything below his knees. "That's for saving my life."

Merlin lets out the breath he didn't know he was holding before Arthur moves even closer and kisses him again (this time with his lips partially open). "That's for saving my life," he says.

Arthur pulls away and his cheeks are flushed. Merlin gapes. And then he's kissed again. "That's for saving my life," Arthur whispers into his mouth and the next kiss has tongue.

By the thirteenth kiss, Merlin is multitasking with one hand out warding off their enemies, his eyes radiating gold, and the other hand clinging tight to Arthur's hair.

"We're not going to die," Merlin agrees at last and mirrors Arthur's grin.
