Rosh hashannah en France wasn't too bad. The services at the orthodox syngague wre pretty good, except that they sang the prayers so fast that I had a lot of trouble following along. After services on Saturday I saw "Ma Super Ex" (My Super Ex Girlfriend) with some friends. It was pretty funny, dubbed in French. Crepes for dinner, and then back to chez Dufourcq.
Sunday, I went back to synagogue for the rest of Rosh Hashanah services. I sat with a friend from IES again, and we were introduced to another American girl with whom we also sat. After services, the three of us and a guy friend (who sat with the men, while we women sat above in the balcony-ish area,) went on a quest to find something open on a Sunday in France. We eventually found some sandwiches that were very satisfactory.
That night .. . most of IES got tickets (through our social coordinator, Pierre,) to a soccer game between Nantes, one of the . . . not so good teams, and Marseilles, on of the really good teams. It was really exciting! We got to the stadium, and Molly and I got steack et frites sandwiches which was essentially a cut up grilled hamburger on a sub roll with ketchup and fries. Pretty tasty. After chugging our sodas which we were told we weren't allowed to bring into the stadium, we found our seats next to the Marseille fans section. It was so awesome to walk into the stadium, with french cheers all around, and the two teams warming up .. . when the game finally started, Nantes in yellow and green and Marseille in powder blue and white . . . well, it was really exciting when Nantes scored the first goal in the first half. The Marseille fans cheered the entire time, but to NO AVAIL because NANTES WON!!!! 2-1, after Nantes recently fired their head coach . . . anyway, it was awesome to have been there for a game like that, in which no one really expected Nantes to win and they DID. Lol.
Anyway, classes last week. They're going pretty well. French 375 with Madame de Pous is good, because she's really encouraging when we make mistakes. L'Histoire d'art et architecture is good too. At first I was skeptical because the entire first class focused on how French art is entirely influenced by Christianity and Jesus, but I've liked it much more with each class. The Palestinian Question is really interesting, as well, because it's pretty much my major . . . I've only had one France and the Atlantic World 16-18 centuries calss so far, but it seemed good when I had it last Tuesday.
Today was the first day of university classes, and I had la sociologie politique. (the sociology of politcs). It was really interesting, I think I'm going to like it a lot because it's also pretty much my major.
So right now, things are looking good across the Atlantic :)
