so friday afternoon, right after my last class, i got into a cab i had called which was waiting for me outside drl. it took me to the airport, where i boarded a plane to tampa. my parents and brother were waiting in a rental car at the baggage claim. they whisked me away to buca de beppo (!), where we were meeting everyone.
friday was my uncle's 60th birthday. my cousin (his eldest daughter) shimon was waiting outside the restaurant for us. she led us in and told us where the fam was sitting, then joined them. a few seconds later we walked in. my uncle's best friend from talahassee and his son, my cousin, who works in portland had already shown up and surprised him. so he wasn't expecting us, to say the least. we walked in and stood at the table. he just stared at us for a few seconds, then went "OH SHIT!"
so we sat down and talked. my uncle is easy to surprise, because, as he put it, he "isn't curious." the four extra places at the table didn't make him suspicious at all. but we hadn't told my aunt or anyone else but shimon, so it was a great surprise. then food came and we ate it (duh). finally we were done and the waiter brought candles and made the whole room sing my uncle happy birthday.
my uncle, being my uncle, called out to a woman at the next table that she wasn't singing. after we finished, she called to my uncle that she had been choking, and apologized for not joining in. then she asked if it was his actual birthday, and he said yes. she then responded...
"there's only one thing i do on birthdays..." and LIFTED HER SHIRT. TO REVEAL HER BOOBS. IN A FAMILY RESTAURANT. needless to say, we couldn't believe it. my brother and cousin zach naturally missed it, and we were glad that shimon's kids (6 and 19 months old) had already been taken home. but my aunt told ryan (the 6 year old) when we went back to the house for cake!
i love my family. we ate cake and just hung around, then went back to the hotel to sleep. next day we got breakfast at panera and then went back to shimon's to swim in their pool and lounge. one more notable event, before i caught a plane back in the evening:
my aunt sylvia was playing with jordan, her granddaughter and the 19-month old daughter of shimon (should i draw a family tree?) anyway, so my aunt was asking her things and she was responding.
sylvia: what does the cow say?
jordan: mooooooo!
sylvia: what does the pig say?
jordan: oiiiink!
sylvia: what does the duck say?
jordan: quack!
and, my favorite:
sylvia: what does marlon brando say?
jordan: (raises her hands in the air) stelllaaa!
oh man. what a great visit...
