So, I've been touring now for almost two months. I've been sick three times already because of going to the elementary schools... needless to say, it has been a crazy adventure. The time is going by so quickly. I really feel so blessed and thankful for this opportunity. It's come at a great time in my life. For instance, I'm on the road here for the next two weeks stopping through Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Missouri! I am getting a taste of life as a working actor and I love it! It's amazing that my job and my hobby are one and the same! Kurt and I are looking into some regional auditions in the upcoming months to find prospects for next year. I'm just getting settled here, but you always have to be looking ahead I guess!
I absolutely love performing for the kids. They really make this job worth all the extra sacrifices! It's such a joy to see their faces light up and react to everything on stage. For a lot of these kids, it's their first time seeing a live performance and I'm so happy to be a part of that.
We had an especially exciting performance earlier this afternoon in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After the show, we usually have a couple minutes left for a quick Q+A session. We tell them a little bit about ourselves (where we went to school) and about the company and then let them ask questions. The kids think of the most interesting things. There are the ones we get every show: "are you really sisters?" "How does the sandman work?" "I liked it" and "I .... forgot" And then there are some kids who throw you for a loop: "Is the puppet considered an actor or a prop" (This question from a first grader!) or "Do you ever get embarrassed when you just let go in front of an audience?" Today though, we had a first. I called on an older kid (maybe like 4th grade) and he said "Just so you know, I think Michigan is the best state in the union" And I was like "woohoo" because I thought maybe he was from there, or had family...or maybe just a good vacation once to Mackinac Island. Well... the kids went nuts! They all (500 kids at this elementary school, Kindergarten through Fifth Grade) started to BOO! Literally... Boo, thumbs down to Michigan. It was like an actors NIGHTMARE. 500 kids just booing! It took us a couple of minutes to get them calmed down. I mean, I could understand it if that happened in Ohio - I wont wear my U of M gear around there, no way! But I never knew Indiana had any issues with the Great Lakes State.
So the real question is, why do kids in Fort Wayne hate Michigan so much?
