Chapter 18
The next morning...
Chae Won spent a sleepless night. The whole night she was turning from one side to the other. The hours didn't seem to pass at all. The tears came back over and over again, though she told herself to stop being foolish, till she didn't have tears to shed anymore. Now she was even more exhausted. Over the hours she accepted the fact that he didn't lie to her. Joong Ki didn't have a reason to. The acceptance didn't help her feeling better though. She still couldn't imagine him being her brother!
Standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom she looked at her tired face. She just changed from her pyjamas into a dress. Still, she looked awful. Quickly she splashed a lot of cold water on her face. It was refreshing. While towelling herself off she left the bathroom. Suddenly her doorbell rang. She knew who it was. It could only be one person this early. She was glad he gave her time to handle the truth. Still, her heart immediately started to race. She was excited and scared at the same time. Slowly she walked to the door. Before opening the door she breathed deeply in.
There he stood, not looking better than her. They shared a look that expressed their feelings more than thousand words. Opening the door wider he entered. Chae Won gulped. She thought she had no more tears left, but a look at him and she could cry a river again. No, it was not the time to shed tears! They had to talk first...that's what she intended till he turned to her in the living room. She started to shiver inwardly looking at him. Her heart screamed for him and so her eyes started to fill slowly with tears again.
Looking at her face Joong Ki made a step after the other till he stood right in front of her. Still without a word he wrapped both arms around her and took her in a tight embrace. Chae Won didn't hold her tears back anymore. Together they cried for the forbidden love they shared. Both tried to let go of their feelings. Slowly they backed out of the hug. Lifting a hand Joong Ki stroke her face tenderly. Nestling her cheek against his palm she tried to prolong the touch. Was it their farewell biding?
"I'm really really sorry for all the misery I caused," he finally said.
"Since when do you know it?" she whispered.
"A day before mom left us," he answered and calmly told her of the secret he had to keep for years.
She finally came to understand why he couldn't tell her all these years.
"I broke the promise I made with my mom but the fear of losing you as well was bigger," he finished his words.
"Was this also the reason why you left for Japan?" she wanted to know. He nodded slightly, "Hmm."
"Let's go!" she said. "Where?" he wondered.
"To meet my mother. She is here! This is the best opportunity to ask her. Who knows when we will meet her again."
"No! I can't, Moonie! I already broke my promise with mom by telling you."
"Do you really want to let this chance go by? We need to have certainty!"
"I saw the birth certificate, what more do I need, Moonie? I also don't think my mom lied to me."
"You mean, you just accept the truth that you and I are bro...bro...brother and sister? Then why do we feel the way we do? Also, you never wanted to know why mom gave you away?"
"Of course, I do! No, I don't! Aiiiishhhhh! I don't know what I want!...No matter for what reason, the fact is, she gave me away, right? Nothing would change this! Besides, I had great parents!"
"I'm sorry, I'm bothering you with all my questions. Oh no, why am I dizzy?..." holding her temples she slowly breathed in.
Immediately Joong Ki helped her to get seated. Closing her eyes she leaned back on the couch.
"Shall I call the doc?" he asked worriedly. He looked around the room to get something to drink for her.
"No! I'll be fine in a minute. Please, just do me a favor and get me a painkiller from my luggage," she begged him.
After five minutes Joong Ki came back with the painkillers. He had to look for it everywhere. She put it on the very bottom of her luggage. She told him that she usually had some in her bag but because it was still not back he had to get her reserves.
"Moonie, do you mean those?" he held them up while entering the living room. Eh, where was she? Maybe in the bathroom?
"Are you in here? Is everything fine? Do you need help?" he stood in front of the bathroom. Silence was the answer.
"Oh, no! Don't tell me....!" a look at her shoes told him that she really left the room. As quickly as possible he left the room, too.
Outside he pushed the button for the elevators. However, it seemed like hours to wait for it so he took the stairs. Luckily her room was only on the fourth floor. In the lobby he looked around but Chae Won was nowhere. Where could she be this fast? Running out of the hotel he checked everywhere. No Moonie! She must have taken a taxi already. Taking out his phone he wanted to call her when he remembered that she still didn't have her bag. "Damn it!" he cursed. He didn't know where her parents stayed at, so he couldn't even drive down there! He was sure her parents mentioned the hotel yesterday along the way but he didn't pay attention. Ottoke? Of course, he could wait for her here but who knows when she would be back? He decided to go back home. He would come back later. Maybe she also would call him back soon? He would kill her for sure! Sighing he waved for a cab.
"I'm sorry, oppa! I understand you but please, understand me, too! I need to know the truth! It involves my life, too!" she mumbled while hiding in the second floor next to the stairs and the elevators, her shoes in her left hand. She cursed her injured foot but was glad In Sung insisted on the doc last night. Though the adrenaline in her blood supressed all pains right now she knew she was handicapped by it. Luckily the door to the stairs had a small scuttle that enabled her to watch the stairs. Five minutes later she saw how he ran down the stairs. Quickly she drew back, afraid he might see her, while pressing her right hand against her hammering heart.
After she waited for another five minutes to make sure that he wouldn't come back she went in the elevator and drove up to her room again. First she called the lobby to order a taxi, to make sure there really was one when she went down. Then she changed into a T-shirt and skinny jeans. Taking out her sport shoes and her shades she wished she had a baseball cap. Well, it must be fine without. Quickly she put her hair up. At last she took out some money that she hid between her clothes in her luggage. Her mom had taught her always to have some, in case she lost her purse on journeys. Now she was glad she picked up this habit.
Half an hour later she stood in front of her parent's hotel room. The whole way from her own hotel room to the cab she felt like a thief looking for Soong Ki everywhere in case he still might search for her somewhere down there.
Chae Won gulped. She felt bad "betraying" him, but she knew he wouldn't break his promise a second time.
"You can put the whole blame on me, oppa! But I have to know the truth otherwise I would never find my peace of mind. Mianhe, oppa!" she whispered. Nervously she pressed her lips together. Then she forced herself to ring the bell.
"Oh honey, what are you doing here this early?" her mom asked her when she opened the door.
"I need to talk to you. Is dad here?" Chae Won wanted to know.
"No, like every morning he went swimming in the hotel pool," her mother answered, letting her in, "What's so urgent that you can't wait till this evening when we are meeting each other anyway?"
Turning to her mom she couldn't prevent her eyes from filling with tears again. Worriedly her mum rushed on her side.
"What's the matter, honey? Come on, let's go in the living room and talk!" her mom insisted.
Chea Won took her hands, stopping her from walking on. Looking in her eyes she said with a fading voice, "Please, mom, do me a favor and tell me the truth! Do I have a...brother? Is...Joo...Joong Ki...my brother?..."
