*boggles*

Okay.  The Ms. Scribe Story: An Unauthorized Fandom Biography has totally freakin' consumed me.

It's got me...hook, line and sinker.  I am riveted.  Cannot turn away.  It's a pyschological case study and train wreck all rolled into one.

I cannot believe the lengths to which someone would go to be in the "popular crowd."  *boggles*  I just do not ( Read more... )

Where you ever on GT back in the day?

Nope. Didn't know anything about any of this while it was happening (and am very glad about that). I stared reading fanfic around 2002ish, but didn't really go anywhere for fic except FictionAlley and some LJs. The only thing I distinctly remember about anything mentioned in the report is reading about Cassie Claire's laptop getting stolen and seeing a pssing mention somewhere about the "charitywank" stuff.

I just find all this "history" amazing. It's like a good crime novel. :-)

Yeah, well, I am loving it for the historical detective-work, but also for the vindication of the whole H/G shipper community who were pretty widely vilified in the fandom when I started poking around in search of HP stuff back in 2001.

I was on GT. I posted fic there and, frankly, it was about the only HP fanfic community I belonged to at the time where I really felt okay about saying that I was an H/G shipper because everyone else considered us stupid wankers.

When people pilloried the GT mods and Arabella from SQ? It was so damned unfair, I pretty well quit the fandom except for following a few journals when I joined up at LJ.

I didn't identify myself as a shipper of any sort when I first got into reading fic... of course, that's changed since. :-) I'll tell you what though, the anti-Ginny backlash after HBP's release drove me absolutely nuts... and I don't even read wank. So I can imagine that it must feel pretty good to see the truth finally coming to light for everyone who felt directly attacked back then.

Have you seen this... http://heidi8.livejournal.com/635425.html

So far I'm on chapter 7, but I had to take a break since I've been reading/skimming the whole thing for over an hour now. It's just so ... unbelievable. I've come across a few people that I strongly suspected were trolls or had internet Munchausen but none of them have gone to those kinds of lengths to continue the charade.

If you've only been reading for an hour, that's pretty good. I've been reading it for...well, today will be three days. It is an amazing story. The psychological implications alone are astounding. Crazy.

Yes, it is.

I can't believe I was actually around when pottersginny and gt_hidden_room were running rampant.

I feel old.

LOL I have to say that I am very glad that I missed all that mess. It is entertaining to read about now, but you can tell that all the pain and devastation caused back then was heart-breaking for some.

I...must concur. My Sunday and Monday have been (almost) thoroughly zapped.

Not sure what tomorrow will bring. If the number checks out, I don't think it could possibly exonerate her.

My flist has been v-e-r-y slow the last couple of days... I can only assume everyone is reading this. :-)

I think exonerating her at this point is going to be very difficult. But we will have to wait and see how things play out!

Damn you, woman! I woke up at about 3:30am and couldn't sleep, and I saw this link and HAD TO CLICK, and... yeah. I've now read through chapter 4. Just. Holy shit. That's better than a soap opera! And as well-written as it is, I even started getting confused. How the HELL did this girl keep all that mess straight in her mind? Can you imagine it? And I think the most operative question (besides WTF?) is... WHY?

Thanks for the very entertaining link, Lils. :D

I can't imagine it. Not at all. I have two LJ's and can't keep up with them. You know how often I post in my other one... like never. I couldn't even begin to imagine trying to keep five, six, seven, however many personalities straight!

I think that "why" is one of the easiest questions to answer. She wanted to be popular, to be famous, to be in "The Inner Circle." She wanted or needed to be part of the in-crowd and she was going to do anything and everything she possibly could to get there. Seemingly, she had no qualms at all about hurting the feelings of her enemies AND her friends. And, to me, that is what's frightening.

Dude, from what I can tell, it goes way beyond a quest for popularity. It appears to be based on some kind of pathological need to constantly manipulate people. It's very strange.

Interesting, though, to see how easily fandom can be manipulated by the right person with the right training in public relations and the right amount of time on their hands. Fandom does love its drama, and this individual was obviously an expert at creating drama. Hell, I'm sitting here devouring the "biography," aren't I? ;)
