I got the impression that he might have died more from loss of blood than anything else, but I could be wrong. Who knows, maybe he isn't really dead..JK never said he was dead...she said his hand thudded to the floor and moved no more. So he may not actually be dead. :P
As for the other thing, Lily stuck by him for years. She watched him get involved with the Death Eaters and she expressed dismay at his choice. He was involved with a group of people who hated people like her. Then when she tried to defend him, he called her what was considered one of the foulest names in the magical world. He made a series of mistakes, he didn't listen, only heard and saw what he wanted and calling her mudblood was the final blow. I know there is a tendency to be more lenient because it is Snape we're discussing, but the sad truth is that he made one mistake after another, his behavior was inexcusable, and sadly, he paid for it. Don't forget that JK said that he had been loved; I think she did love him, but when he behaved the way he did, he totally fucked it up.
