I read a Time magazine article the other day, in which a psychologist stated that our natural state was not to be happy in life, that humans were naturally depressed, such is the burden of intelligent life and so on and so forth. His solution to the anxiety and stress that accompanies sadness? accept that life will never make you happy. then die. I ( Read more... )

It also has been shown that there is a higher amount of depressed females than males, which may be for several reasons, not to mention that its possible that males simply show less symptoms because they are not as expected in society to express their emotions. But since this psychologist doesn't seem to consider other possible factors for anything, i will, out of spite, simply assume females are just more depressed. But assuming females are more depressed, it would mean by this psychologist that we are more intelligent than men, which hasn't been proven. Men and women appear to have no significant difference in overall intelligence; according to some studies, women overall have a higher mental range within the average IQ scores, while men are at the extreme ends, either at lower than women, or higher, so you can't really say if one is more intelligent than the other, if you define it by IQ since it pretty much averages out. Also, they differ in abilities such as language or motor skills, so if anything it would be one of the factors females excell at, which lead to a higher rate of female depression, according to the psychologist. But i've never heard of a study conducted comparing the abilities females are better with, and then ranking these abilities and finding correlations for depression. It would be too tedious, since there are many differences between females and males, and it's possible that these differences may be related in such a way that you couldnt just take one trait, test it, and say that that is the factor that would lead to depression.
I'm sorry this was so long, but, it vexed me to hear about a psychologist making such a simple conclusion to what really is a complex question, in which many of the puzzle pieces are missing. Intelligence is so varied (Gardner, a renowned psychologist, believes there are 7 areas) that to say depression (a disorder that has many genetic factors that we have yet to discover) is positively correlated with it, is bad psychology, and he should know better than to try to just make such a general conclusion by tearing humanity up in bits and making things fit. blah, i end my furious rant here. So in conclusion, be happy, and don't think you weren't meant to be.
