Something In The Water by
KemmasandiPairing: Marco/OC, Ace/OC
This story is one of those rare cases where to appreciate it fully one needs to incorporate the story with author’s own fanwork. Kemmasandi is in the business of world building that is so extensive and rich it requires both fanfiction and fanart. On
deviantART one can find images, portraits, profiles, descriptions and timeline. Most of the world building is happening here and although one can enjoy a story without delving into visuals, like I did for a time, your experience will be richer if you do. Also, so many spoilers and speculations are a treasure chest for any fan on principle alone.
As for the story itself, it’s only possible deterrent is that it starts and for a few chapters deals only with original characters. It takes a while for it to come to Ace, Marco and the rest of the Whitebeards pirates so if one is not very patient or judges too quickly - you just might one day find out what you actually missed. Gods know I did that mistake a few times in my lifetime.
The main character is Loki who founds herself in an unknown place with amnesia. It’s a great credit to writer that she pulls it off while evoking no thought of clichés or Mary Sues. It’s also not easy writing perception and musings of an adult who is several days, weeks old but it is done as realistically as possible.
The draws are manifold - exploration of Loki who is interesting on her own and seeing One Piece World through her eyes, insight into nitty-gritty of actual pirate life which is rather hard to find in OP fanfiction and in relation to that - pirate politics.
Special mention deserves a vast array of OCs who are engaging and developed to the point of disbelief.
Kemmasandi has great plans for this story and if she manages to put it all on paper, it will be one glorious Saga. For now - it’s one great story well, well worth the reading.
Triple so if you are a Marco and Ace fan.
