The end of an era

When the contract changed at work, I did not get a good deal with the new company. I fought with them for the first year and it was stressful and unpleasant. I immediately began looking for another job, but in this area librarian jobs are few and far between. It's been three years since that contract change over, and I finally got another job. I took a civil service test for librarians in my county, and I got a state job. Yay! Of course, people freak out when I tell them where it is. I'm going to be a librarian at a prison. Yes, Jane is going to jail! :) Don't worry, there's a guard in the library all the time, and only the prisoners on good behavior get to use the library. On the one hand I'm really happy to leave my current company and get state benefits and retirement. On the other hand, I've been at the Lab for 16 years and I've made a lot of good friends there. Today was my last day. We got to close the library so they could take me to lunch. That's the only time the library has been closed during business hours in my entire time working there. It was a great lunch--people were sentimental, but joking around and laughing and it didn't get too mushy. I'm a little nervous to leave all of the known behind. I was very good at my job and I knew it well. To start all over in a new library is both exciting and a little frightening. Mostly it's exciting, though, and I'm looking forward to having a new challenge. Hopefully the people will be great like they were at my old job. I'll find out on Monday when I start the new one.
