Samurai Live Reaction

Just now watching the first episode, so I thought I'd record my thoughts as I go and then go read all those other reaction posts. :)

A condensed back story before the episode instead of that being the first episode is an interesting choice. I'm not crazy about that. I like seeing them come together and learn about the power. Maybe it's coming in flashback?

Nyloks? Really?

I think I'm relieved by the red ranger. I was getting maybe just a little tired of the inexperienced/ reluctant red motif. No offense to Connor, Jack, Nick, Mack or Casey. (I never watched RPM, so I don't know about that Red.)

Oh, the nostalgia the title song is inspiring right now. I'm sure you all understand. It's lovely to hear it again. Really brings home that this is Saban again and not Disney.

The villains seem typically ridiculous, but that's okay. Lothor - arguably the silliest villain ever - was always my favorite.

Bulk had a sibling? Who had a kid? I'm not even gonna think about the time line there or if it works out. His voice is going to get annoying real fast though. In fact, I'm already annoyed.

Is it bad that I'm overly concerned with the fact that I don't see any red on the Red Ranger? Ah, Mike has subtle green on. Perhaps I just missed it on Red.

Mike's gonna take on the monster by himself? I think I've seen this episode before... ;)

But, but where's my overly elaborate morphing sequence? No fancy moves? No dance? No elaborate call off of name, rank and serial number? I feel so cheated.

Ah, I see in the group scene that they are wearing their colors, just not as obviously as before. Mike's hurt? Does the power not protect him?

Reluctant Green motif?

Twenty minutes in and I'm already forming the opinion that Saban is taking PR more seriously than Disney. There also seems to be a return to old school Red in that he's more calm, serious and in charge whereas later Reds were unsure and/or goofy and/or laid-back. Not an insult to either kind. My favorite Reds are still Shane and Jack.

Oh, there's the elaborate morphing sequence. Seriously, one day I'm writing a fic where by the time they finish morphing the bad guy has destroyed everything in sight and run away. Probably for SPD, because let's face it, I think it was the longest.

The combining is very, very Voltron. I'm not sure I approve. If he says 'form blazing sword' I'm leaving.

Teamwork - always a good theme for me. I love team as family in any show I watch.

All in all, I liked it. I didn't adore it, and I wish we could have started at the beginning. I feel like the only one I really know is Mike. In fact, his is the only name I remember. In other seasons our first impressions of a character might have been one dimensional (Ethan's a computer nerd, Nick likes motorcycles, Sky is anal) but at least we had a first impression of everyone by the end of the first episode.

Early days though and my DVR is set to ride out the series. Go, go power rangers. :)

ETA - I love that everyone else's reaction posts are filled with race issues and gender issues and special effects. Whereas I'm concerned with color coding outfits. :)
