small successes in the german language

born of small failures. but whatever.

last month i bought a bahncard, which is 100 euro that you spend to get half off all the train tickets you buy for a year. i almost completely understood the whole process, getting a little picture of myself, filling in the form, usw. i wrote my then-current address in the address space, figuring it was, i dont know, for statistical purposes or something. and i got a little ticket-like reciept at the end, which i used to get half off my tickets.

but then i realized, this reciept is only good til october 27th and after that i am supposed to recieve some sort of card with my picture on it (makes sense) in the mail (oops). so i called and told them to send it to bremen. which isnt a big deal. im just proud of myself that i did it in german.

on the other hand, it wasnt as amusing as the time i called my bank in poland, and i asked the guy, do you speak english, and he said, yes, but tell me what your quesiton is first... that was funny.

i met the fifthgraders today. they speak, like, no english. yet. so that will be fun. and by fun i mean ridiculously challenging. there are, like, thirty-five of them.
