Summary: Petunia receives her invite to Lily and James' wedding
Notes: Totally just as Petunia-centric as it as about Lily and James, but I think there's enough shippiness that it suffices.

The envelope lands on the doorstep on a Tuesday morning, wedged absentmindedly between a letter from Vernon’s sister and the car registration bill. Petunia makes herself a cup of tea and settles at the table before peeling the corners back with shaking fingers, because a letter from her sister can only be bad news. With Lily, letters have always been bad news.

It takes a moment to process that Lily is getting married. Married, with all the implications of conservative behaviour that are -- well, the ancient tradition of marriage is something Petunia never thought she’d associate with people like themShe’s thankful, at least, that Lily remembered to send it by normal post. In recent years, Lily’s become like a caricature of her former self, prattling animatedly about hair ( ... )

I like this! I was actually going to do Petunia receiving the invite from Lily as well, but you did such a brill job with this that I'm not sure I want to anymore. Because yours was just great! Nice and bitter with only the smallest bit of sweet.

I really liked the With Lily, letters have always been bad news.

Write it anyway! I'm fairly sure your interpretation will be different enough from mine to make it worthwhile... (And I'm not one to discourage Petunia fic, honestly)

I like how you've contrasted Vernon with James here in Petunia's mind and used it as more fodder for jealousy. I'll buy that!

she can’t remember the last time Vernon looked at her with that same hunger, touched her with that same passion

And I really like the line about Harry. It just sounds so Petunia.

And I'll admit to be a little too obsessive at times and doing a lot of reading between the lines, but I definitely didn't see too much in Petunia's life that made her happy apart from Dudley, and the few glimpses we got into her relationship with Vernon appeared very much as though she was just the 'housewife', so to speak. Add that to her obvious jealousy of Lily herself, and well...

What was that I said about being a little too obsessive?

I absolutely loved this, loved it so much.

I adored how you captured Petunia's jealousy of Lily in this drabble and I especially like the comparisons between James and Vernon - and the resentment she feels towards aspects of her own marriage. It was all very realistic and made me feel really sorry for her. Loved it. To the death.

I really, really enjoyed this fic! It was fantastic to get into Petunia's head for a bit and see how she really felt about her sister and James. I have to say that the idea of James and Lily clinging to each other at a family get together and being "crazy in love" is perfect. My favorite line was, "she’s reminded of the consequences that being crazy (in love or not) can bring". Petunia just sort of nailed it right there.

And I can never not see these two as anything other than possessive and all over each other (except when it's absolutely necessary not to be), just because of what they went through to be together in the first place.

Lovely fic! After Deathly Hallows, I always wanted to do a little fic on Petunia, but you just nailed her in five hundred words. Great job!

I loved this - so very in character for Petunia. And I kind of feel a little badly for her about never experiencing the kind of love Lily had with James?

Me too. The glimpses of Petunia that we get in DH have always made me think that she had the potential to do so much, if she hadn't let being "ordinary" get in the way.
