Summary:Lily is missing one critical item in the old tradition. Luckily, James can help.
“I don’t think you’re supposed to use cats for that purpose,” Remus remarked, watching James employ a Sticking Charm to secure a small parcel to Hooligan’s black fur.
“We always have,” said Sirius, standing idly around James’s familiar bedroom in his immaculate black dress robes with ornate silver clasps.
“Ever heard of owls?” chimed Peter.
James finished fussing with the parcel and scooped up Lily’s cat. “Alright, you know what to do. Good kitty.” He set him down on the other side of the door and shooed him off.
Before Hooligan’s paws had even touched the floor, they’d been stretching and reaching for it, eager as he always was to squirm out of James’s grasp. He bade his mistresses’ fiancé a haughty look before setting off down the hall, tail stuck firmly in the air.
“Like pet, like owner,” breathed Sirius, whose line of sight caught the interaction.
James straightened up, wearing a smirk, and rechecked his reflection in the oval mirror on the dresser. A whole bloody hour to go. He swiped a hand through his ever-obstinate hair, to no avail.
“So are you going to tell us what was in the parcel?” renewed Peter, sitting on the edge of James’s bed and surely wrinkling the back of his robes all to hell.
“I told you, something blue. Lily said she didn’t have anything.” James’s eyes twinkled.
Sirius snuffed a laugh, betraying his privy to the joke. It had been his idea, after all. ‘Why don’t you just tell her your balls are blue from spending the last three nights at my flat? ‘
Apparently, it was something of a Muggle tradition-not seeing the bride beforehand-which they’d taken a bit too far. Having left so many wedding details until the last minute due to more pressing Order business, Lily had finally decided to employ Alice’s help in getting the Potter Manor into shape so James’s widowed and elder mum wouldn’t exhaust herself.
In the meantime, James’s stay in London had turned into something of an extended stag party while the hens got on in Cornwall.

Lily looked up from the dressing table, a set of magically-heated curlers in her hair, as Hooligan sauntered into the room, sporting a thoroughly nonplussed expression. She spied the cumbersome package immediately.
“What have they done to you now, poor thing?” She rose from her chair and scooped him into the cradle of her arms, peeling the parcel from his fur. The first thing she came across was a note.
Dear Evans,
Don’t worry about the blue thing. I’ve got it covered. Three days in London without you has taken care of that. In the meantime, I think you should wear these.
Can’t wait to see you,
James
Into her hand fell a pair of studded white leather knickers.
Smirking far more appreciatively than she would care to admit, she set Hooligan down and prepared to shimmy them on under her dress robes in place of her current, far less exciting ones…
