Shoot, I don't mind the venting at all. It sounds to me like they're a fairly selfish, close-minded couple who are mostly concerned with themselves. I know the type---my sister's in-laws are exactly like that. They HAVE to be the center of attention, all the time.
I can't understand why family is like that. I can't understand, actually, why families don't make time to see each other more and be there more for each other. It makes little sense to me. I was doing some genealogy research stuff on my family week before last and I realized my dad's uncle, who he used to talk about regularly, died in 1992 or something. I was shocked---the way my dad talked about him, I thought he'd been dead for thirty or forty years when I was a kid! I wondered why my dad never went to see him---at least, he never did after I was old enough to know. Same with several of his cousins, etc.
But yes, in your case, it seems as if there are definitely some serious family dynamics going on there---and who knows what is going on that you're not privy to. People like that are often, basically, unhappy folks who are trying to prove something to themselves.
I think it's great that Dink and your sister make time to spend together. I loved spending time with my niece when she was a preteen, but by the time she reached the age of 13 or so... it was no fun anymore. :( It was like constantly competing with a cell phone for her attention, and basically, I became "uncool," I guess. Now that she's 26, she's very different and past those years, but I still rarely see her nowadays.
Feel free to vent anytime... with family, that's sometimes all you can do, isn't it? It seems like there's never much hope of changing them (despite Aragorn's admonition to always have hope, even!).
