After the City sank, only those worlds lit by the Seven could yield a yearly crop. Many plants died, yearning for light. The woods, however, seemed unaffected. Even as other plants slowed and slept or died, the forests thrived; they were Katie's first, her first labor and love. Katie created the forests; she formed the first seeds from her own teeth. Every seedling knows her voice and breath and touch. Katie tended the woods and watched over every tree. She begged them to always flourish, to follow the cycles she'd created to keep them strong. Every tree remembers their promise.
When the City sank, the trees did not forget their oath. They knew the seasons deep in their roots and so, in what would be Spring, buds formed and flowered on empty branches. Leaves sprouted, grew thick and green when it was time for Summer and then fell dry and colored in Autumn. Then the trees slept for a Winter before flowering again. The yearly cycle continued, constant and unfailing, as the trees waited for their Katie to return to them.
