Lily Evans was feeling better than she had during the entire second half of the school year. It helped that OWLs were done, save for the Defense Against the Dark Arts one. However, she knew all that she had all the knowledge that she could fit into her head about that subject. That and she could ask Remus any questions she had while they did their rounds around the castle together. Another thing that helped is that Remus answered all of her questions in a way that she could understand the answer. After a long moment of silence between them as they moved throughout the castle, she asked “Are you worried about the Defense OWL the day after tomorrow?”

“No, and you shouldn’t either,” Remus responded with a smile. “You’re prepared and I’m prepared, so I think we’re set. Besides, if you study too hard or too much, then you might end up actually forgetting something.”

Lily raised an eyebrow at that comment. It wasn’t unusual to see Remus have his nose in a book studying rather than making mischief with his friends. “That’s odd to hear coming from you.”

“I’ve had first hand experience from it,” Remus explained. “I studied so hard for a Transfiguration test once and nearly failed it. It was because I couldn’t remember anything I studied as my brain shut down. Its the same idea with the Defense OWL; study too much and you’ll forget.”

“That’s good to know then,” Lily said with a grin. “I hope you don’t mind my questions continuing though.”

“I don’t mind them at all,” Remus said, smiling back at her. “Besides, what are friends for, really?”

“Good point - you know, not everyone can understand why you are friends with James Potter and Sirius Black when you are how you are,” Lily said.

“They make things interesting,” Remus replied. “And they aren’t as bad as you think, Lily. Its just that they get bored and have to do something. You should give James a chance, though.”

It was no secret that James was trying to get Lily’s attention through small gestures, but continued to fumble it in someway. She didn’t care for his antics and that was well known as well. The only thing that wasn’t was her relationship with Severus, which she was not about to tell any Gryffindor, even her friends. “I’d rather not though, from what I’ve seen,” Lily says quietly. “I know he’s your friend Remus, and you want to help him, but I don’t think he’s for me.”

“Well, then who is?” Remus asked and chuckled softly. “Considering that the last time a Gryffindor and a Slytherin dated, it resulted in the Slytherin having to run away from her family.”

“We - but - how the hell do you know that?” Lily asked, appalled that he knew. She was trying to keep it one of her best kept secrets and could not think on how she messed that one up.

“Overhearing Severus talking one time and realizing it was you,” Remus said. “Its not a bad thing, even with Severus. You could get him to wash his hair more.”

Lily gently wapped Remus’ arm for that remark. “He washes his hair, thank you. It just looks that way for some reason. I haven’t asked why.”

“Okay,” Remus said, looking amused. “You might want to.”

“I might,” Lily said as she tripped over her own two feet and Remus caught her. “Sorry, decided to be clumsy in that moment.”

“Its alright,” Remus said and helped her get a bit more steady. “Everyone is allowed to be clumsy once in a while. Or even more than that. Just don’t make a habit of it, I guess?”

“I’ll try not to,” Lily said quietly as she looked up at Remus. She had this nagging thought in the back of her head since they started their patrol together. She had wondered what it would be like to kiss him. She wasn’t sure where the thought really came from, but she knew that she wanted to. She pulled to her full height and softly kissed his lips.

He blinked as Lily kissed him and softly kissed back for a moment before pulling away. “Lily -“

“I’m sorry,” Lily whispered as she blushed a deep red from the full embarrassment of what she just attempted to do.

“No, don’t be but - why - “ Remus took a breath and tried to collect his thoughts. Lily Evans, the girl one of his best friends wanted to snog, just kissed him. This was bad. This was bad on so many different levels of bad, possibly the ninth circle of it. He’d read enough Dante to know that’s where traitors to their kindred went.

“I wanted to see what it felt like,” Lily said quietly. “But, Remus, it didn’t feel right, did it?”

Remus blinked and realized that’s what he was feeling. Along with feeling like a traitor to James, he did feel like he just kissed his sister. “No, it didn’t. It felt like I was kissing my sister.”

“And here I felt I was kissing my brother. Shall we leave it behind us?” Lily asked.

“I think we’re going to have to, considering it already happened,” Remus said.

“You know what I mean,” Lily countered.

“Yes, I do. Fine, we won’t. Besides, it was odd. Nobody likes to hear about odd kisses,” Remus replied.

Lily nodded a yes. “And we’re a bit done…I’m going to go back to the tower. Coming with?”

“I will in a bit. I need to go to the library,” Remus said. He also wanted time to think, but he wasn’t going to say that.

“I’ll see you later then,” Lily said and hugged her friend. Remus hugged her back before she went off back towards the tower.
