Making an adjustable toddler Kilt

Sep 25, 2013 03:09

Recently my husband and I decided to take our son back to Faire with us, so I decided to make him a kilt. This was my first attempt so there are some things that could certainly be improved on and suggestions are welcome. I have tried to do a step by step tutorial just in case someone else would like to make one, it has been about a month since I did it, so if you have questions or I skipped something, just ask! If you aren't on livejournal, message me on Facebook

1) select your fabric, it is much easier to lay in pleats if the fabric has nice, crisp lines to work from. Finish the bottom and the top, the ends can wait until you have figured out the exact length that works for your child. You will need a much longer piece of fabric than you think.

2) pin the pleats down. Once you are happy with the way they are set, iron to make the pleats crisp. Sew a line across the top to hold the pleats in place. I hand sewed so I could hide the stitches a little easier (I had blue thread on hand)

3) Add snaps onto the cloth diaper (or diaper cover) I think I placed mine a little lower than I should have. I put 3 on the back to hold the pleated section, and one extra to help hold up the front flap.

4) Add your snaps onto the kilt, matching the center up first with your center snap on the diaper back. I hid the snaps on the inside of the pleats so it does not show from the back.

5) Add a set of snaps to shorten the kilt.

6) Snap down to the shorter setting, add snaps (remember to match placement on the diaper.) These will be visible from the outside, so I used clear.

7) Sew across the pleats to keep them secure now that all the back snaps are on.
8) Apply the front snaps, space them the same as the front snaps on the diaper so that it can grow with your child. Add fold over snaps and then apply snaps for the short size. These will not be visible once the other flap is folded over, so color is not an issue.

9) Add snaps for the outside flap to attach to, one at the end of the fabric, one near the hip

This is the back, on the longer setting:

Shorter setting:

Front, on the shorter setting (and yes, I later realized that I put the opening on the wrong side, traditionally the kilt should be pinned on the right knee, not the left)
