It began a long time ago...

My love for acapella that is. I guess a lot of this started during the old school R&B era with Boyz II Men during the 90s and Bell Biv DeVoe. But the songs of that time were definitely New Jack Swing with a capella harmonies. It was the gate way to really appreciating a capella.

What I love most about a capella groups though is that it's the closest that you'll ever get to music made through only human vocal cords. Theres a sense of purity ringing within the voices of these musicians, plus vocal percussion sounds/beat box is also amazing. It gives me this tingly feeling deep down inside, and this euphoric feeling of such beauty ringing in my ears. There's just something so special about listening to just the human voice.

On Wednesday when I was out shopping at Best Buy (was purchasing Bruno Mars' album), I actually came across a Straight No Chaser Christmas Album. I actually came across their a capella stuff earlier this year and was amazed by them. They're a huge group (singing group of 10) and their story of how they came to be is really cute. Now I'm tempted to go out and purchase their christmas album... they've got some really good songs.

In the spirit of christmas:

Another group that my friend luniana introduced me to is Naturally 7. They're an American a capella group of seven members. They are a bit more closer to a capella / R&B / New Jack Swing style and have excellent beat boxing. I think I fell in love with after watching this candid flash mob video they did on a subway in Paris:

No matter what, it just proves that we are humans that are moved by music. It's also really sad when you realize how little we see musicians in public like that any more. People are intimidated by it, or pay no attention to it, or are just too busy to stop and hear the music. It's unfortunate that we live like this now.

There's also many other a capella group out there in the world, like The Gospellers in Japan. Tons of independent barber shop groups and a capella groups in universities. Despite it's lack of popularity it's still there. Oh well.

Happy Christmas to all. I'm going to start packing tonight and head back to the Bay Area. I'm looking forward to seeing my friends, Dickens Faire on sunday and seeing my hot chiropractor on monday. how does this time pass so quickly?
