wow, so we met some awesome people that opened up thier home to us from craigslist. They totally rock and gave me and Marc a room and Ian his own room too! They're super cool.
We had a bed, dresser and end table donated to us from somebody off of craigslist too! Not only did they donate it, but then they delivered it AND set it up for us in our room upstairs! Talk about cool yo!
Went to the red cross today, it was good but weird. I'm really NOT one to take charity.
We walked in and there was a place to sign up if you were a Katrina victim, then we were ushered off to a "special" waiting area for Katrina victims. ALL kinds of food and drinks and video games and toothbrushes and diapers and anything you could think of that people would donate at our disposal. But ONLY for Katrina victims. It was weird waiting in the "special" room... Then we immediatly got our case worker who ushered us to the "special" area for Katrina victims to do thier paperwork. We told the lady our story and walked out with $130 in travler's checks and $500 on a debit card. So bonus! I can finally get my stolen driver's license replaced!! But still....the lack of red tape was kinda weird. I have NO id, Marc's id is from Arizona, but he has his business card with the old address on it. So they called somewhere to verify that he lived there and voila, we walked out with cash in hand and backpacks FULL of stuff. They never even asked me for id or anything... strange. Not that I'm ungrateful, and thank god they didn't ask cuz I ain't got nuthin right now but still, the lack of checking out who I was seemed weird to me. I dunno.
It all seems surreal to me and I feel really bad taking charity considering how fortunate we really were. We could have been so much worse off. If I hadn't met marc....the house was underwater I heard....*shrugs*
Now when I'm back on my feet I'm gonna have to go volunteer at some RedCross function or something, just to return the karmatic favor. Its totally awesome that that resource is there though. We were very fortunate.
Now off to check my FEMA application...
