Books

I've read so many books lately. I thought I'd list them and a really brief synopsis.

1. 9 Highland Road
A nonfiction book about a group home on Long Island and it's residents.

2. A Face First
A girl and her mother are in a terrible car accident, and the girl's recovery is the main part of this book.

3. If We Could Hear the Grass Grow
The story of a therapist who starts her own summer camp for the most challenging children who can't attend other camps because of their special needs. The parallel story is of her family and how she and her children learn about themselves through running the camp.

4. Blood Letting: A Memoir of Secrets, Self-harm, and Survival
An autobiographical account of the author's struggles with self-harm, rocky relationships, and her attempts to just find her place in life.

5. Twilight
I don't even think I need to summarize this one. I'm reading the series because Rachelle did and because Rachelle is also reading the Harry Potter books. Thought I'd try them. I love the story lines, and I lvoe the other characters, but the main character is extremely annoying.

6. New Moon
See above.

7. I Can Hear the Morning Dove
A fictionalized account of a teenaged girl living with schizophrenia.

8. Acting Normal
Fiction. A girl is starting a new school but she has some demons in her past she's still trying to cope with on top of making new friends, working with a new therapist, and dealing with her parents.

9. All Unquiet Things
Baillie's x-girlfriend dies under odd circumstances. He finds an unexpected ally in her cousin. Together they begin to unravel the mystery surrounding the girl's death while also clearing the cousin's father of the charges.

10. Attention. Deficit. Disorder.
This book was pretty weird. It starts with the main character finding out about his x-girlfriend's suicide. At the wake, he finds out that she had an abortion of what would have been his child. The book goes on to find him in a variety of situations, seemingly looking for meaning to life. He ends up at Burning Man...

11. Sickened
This is a non-fiction account of a girl who suffered at the hands of her mother. The book details what we now call Munchausen BY Proxy.

12. Skin
Told from the perspective of the brother of a girl who has an eating disorder set against the back drop of the predictably dysfunctional family.

13. The Island of Doctor Moreau
Classic scifi book about an island where a scientist is creating fantastic creatures.

14. The Catterpillar's Question
A really weird scifi book about a man charged with transporting a blind and mute girl across the country to some kind of institution. They never make it there. Instead the end up in some weird wormhole that brings them to an alien place...

15. Kim: Empty Inside
This book was really not that great. It was unrealistic and terribly cliche. A girl begins to struggle with an eating disorder towards the end of her senior year in high school. Thankfully she finds a great therapist and boyfriend who make everything all better.

16. Silent Witness: The Untold Story of Terry Schiavo's Death
Many of you probably remember the Terry Schiavo case and the mass media and political shit storm that it was. This book was an interesting look in to the circumstances surrounding the case from start to finish.

17. 2001 A Space Odissy
The classic scifi book about a manned mission to Saturn.

18. A Night in the Lonesome October
The players are gathering, and their familiars are the main characters in this book. The main character, Snuff, we assume to be the dog belonging to Jack the Ripper along with a crew of monsters from history.

19. Tropic of Night
Jane is being stalked by her husband who is a powerful witchdoctor who gained his power in Africa. Jane, thought to be dead by everyone else, is in hiding and along the way acquires a 4-year-old little girl. The other main character is the detective charged with solving the cases of grewsome murders the husband is leaving in his wake.

20. Circle of Magic Series
This is a series of 4 books for young adults. It follows 4 young mages through their discovery and subsequent training of their unusual powers. Even if you don't like magic and fantasy books, you'd probably like these if you read YA.
