That didn't mean Sam, Professor Winchester, Bridge, Xander, Willow, or Mel were back, though. Damn it.

Wasn't sure if she was gonna get the machine or not. Faith chewed her lip and waited.

"Hey, Faith," Dawn said, checking the caller ID as she answered. "I'm back from New York. How're you?"

"Hey, kiddo," she said, closing her eyes. "Good. Mostly. Probably getting drunk off my ass tonight. Those statues are ugly."

"And creepy. Let us not forget the overpowering power of the creepy," Dawn added. "Everything done here?"

"I think so," she said, taking a deep breath. "We got them fuckin' statues all locked up, staring at each other. When does your boy get home?"

"I don't know," she frowned and bent over to hug Scout again. "I was kinda hoping he'd be here by the time I got back, but not so much. You heard from anyone yet?"

"Not yet," she said, shaking her head. "Figure Dale could use some coffee, I'm gonna take him some later if he's in. Gotta be trippy, sleeping all that off."

In a softer voice she added, "He'll be here soon. They're okay."

Dawn really, really wished she could believe Faith. "How's he gonna be sleeping if you're giving him coffee?"

"It's Dale," she shrugged. "I think he could sleep with a coffee IV."

She chewed her lip. "I'd ask if you wanted to ... go hang out or something, but ... that kinda means you won't be there when the boy gets back."

"I need to be here, I think," she said apologetically. "Just to see him and touch him, you know? Make sure he's really here. What about later in the week?"

"Kiddo, you don't gotta tell me," she laughed. "When Renee gets back, I'm gonna ..."

Uh. She wasn't dating Renee. Right? And she hadn't really said anything about Renee to people anyway, and that called for a topic shift.

"It's good, Dawnie. Whenever. You need rest and you need Mr. Amazing Hands, and you'd just be checking your watch if you went anywhere right now."

Faith kicked at the ground. "Cop?" she offered. "Latina, hot ass. Had to ... take off for some ... thing. Told me to watch Dale's back, so I have been."

"Soooooooo, you're dating a really hot police officer?" Dawn couldn't help grinning. "Am I ever gonna get to meet her?"

"Not really ... dating or anything," Faith managed, shrugging a little. They weren't. More or less. Kinda? "She, uh, she's in ... Tibet? Gotham. Left Tibet, back to Gotham. Dunno when she's getting back. Bad shit going down, off to save the world, has gun, will travel. Some corrupt shit in the city and why the fuck that means she's gotta go to Tibet, I don't got a clue, here. So you can't meet her yet, she's ... in Gotham. Or maybe back in Tibet by now."

"She'll be back," Dawn said immediately, happy to be back on this side of the conversation, "and once she is and she's over her jet lag and you've welcomed her home, er," and here she paused, blushing, "properly, I demand pain in the ass family rights to interrogate the girl you're sort of dating."
