Weiss smiled. She didn't seem too weirded still. "So, I was just, uh, walking down the hall on my way to see this friend of mine. Last time I saw her, I said something kind of dumb. I was hoping that she and I could back to the awesome friends vibe again. Think I have a shot?"
"It's possible," she sat up, since there was no residual weirdness, really. "Particularly if your friend is a normal, non-hose beast kind of person who really, really missed you while you were in Los Angeles over the holidays."
"Like, your grandmother told stories of her naughty childhood weird or zombies came after you because you have just the right brain kind of weird?" She asked. It was important to be specific. "And either way, I'm very, very glad you're back and in one piece."
"So, are you going to do anything about it?" She leaned over the side of the bed and pulled out a box of imported European chocolate, took a piece, and offered the box to Weiss. It seemed appropriate. "And does she like you, too?"
"That's the thing," Weiss said. "There's no way she'd go for me. It's been way hard trying to keep my cool around her. I've been working with her on a project and she seems pretty keyed into it. But then she also flirts with me sometimes, but who knows if that's just her thing or..." Weiss facepalmed. "Girls are confusing." He took a chocolate, because dude, he earned it.
"Why wouldn't she go for you?" Dawn asked, offended on his behalf, "You're cute and smart and fun and nice! If she doesn't like you, she obviously needs her head examined and you're better off without her."
"Um, and this may be a radical idea...but you could ask?" She suggested.
"Uh... trust me, Parker likes her guys dangerous and a little messed up," Weiss said. "And she's still hung up on that Jarod guy. Besides, she's my friend and I don't want to screw that up by making things awkward."
"Okay, I like you a lot, but I don't think you could do messed up," Dawn said after a minute or so of Weiss-study, "maybe you could try mysterious, if you wanted to go that way. But you deserve someone better than someone who's hung up on someone else, Eric."
She looked down at her hands and thought about how different things would have been if Xander had ever told Buffy the truth. "Friends are important, but maybe...maybe if there's a real chance at something it's worth taking the shot."
"You may have said," Dawn reached out to pat Eric's arm. "I don't know if I can help. You're talking to someone whose first kiss was with a vampire, who humiliated herself for a football player she didn't even know, and then ended up breaking up with her first real boyfriend when she couldn't stop thinking about kissing his brother."
Which might, just possibly, have been more information than Weiss ever wanted or needed to know, but there had been coffee and chocolate consumed. "So, um, if you knew she would say yes, what would you do?"
