I was barely home this weekend...really, barely home the week prior, as
well. It's been nuts and today's the first day I've actually just
stayed in and relaxed, which feels nice. I went home to Jersey to see
my cousin Sam and my Uncle Neal and Aunt Anna. They were in the city
for the 2005 Book Expo at the Javits Center in NYC. 'Twas the most
family fun I've had in ages. Friday night my mom and I took the train
into the city and met up with them so we could meet Sam after not
seeing him since he was a baby. He was overtired & kind of a crank,
so we called it an early night and went back to the most amazing hotel
ever,
The Muse.
Saturday we got up early and wandered over to their hotel, the Park
Central; took Sam for the day while my Uncle Neal and Aunt Anna
worked all day at the
Book Expo 2005.
We took Sam to Central Park and the Central Park Zoo, where we watched polar bears eating
lunch, sea lions being fed their lunch\performing, and all sorts of
other things. Sam clung to me like nothing else, always wanting to be
picked up and having me push him around in the stroller all day. I
loved it.
We had lunch at the zoo and played with our french fries, giggling like
fools. He's the cutest thing ever; I wish I could see him more often.
Later on, my dad met up with us, and since he'd met Sam by flying out
there a few months ago, Sam flew over to him immediately, yelling,
"Uncle Richie, Uncle Richie!!!" and laughing. After the zoo, he was
getting tired and so we were going to go over to some toy store where
there's a ferris wheel inside that Sam could ride. But as I was pushing
him in the stroller, he completely passed out. So my mom, dad and I
strolled down the streets of the city, through this random street fair.
It was amazing, all sorts of booths full of food and things. It was
odd, since it was the first time I'd ever gone to one of those things
without putting up a fight, haha.
My Dad made some really stupidly funny remarks too....
Dad: Hey, you know what this looks like? (Referring to the four of us walking through the fair)
Mom and Me: Uhhh, no?
Dad: Grandma and Grandpa, Mommy and baby.
Me: *groans* oh, shut up Dad!
Kind of dumb, but it was funny. I started noticing all these people watching Sam and "awwwing" and then looking up at me. Ugh.
Then he made some random comment...
Dad: I've been noticing a bunch of parents calling their kids, "Come here, Christian; want some food Christian..."
Me: Yeah, so?
Dad: Well how come no one ever calls their kids, "Hey Jewish, come here Jewish!"
Yeah. Weird. Whatever.
Sunday, since my Aunt and Uncle had given us extra passes to the Expo,
my mom and I went in. It was nuts, since I hadn't been to the Book Expo
since I was in the second grade. My mom and I filled up her bookbag, my
tote bag, and four shopping bags up with books, posters and publishing
house catalogs. My cousin Alex was there with her publishing house,
University of CA
Press.I got to hang out with her for a bit and catch up; she
told me she'd talk to her friends at Harvard and MIT presses if I
wanted a job there.
She also told me to go check out
Chronicle Books, which had a whole row
full of booths. They're the publishing house responsible for the Bad
Girls' guides and books, and they have this amazing photo book full of
pictures of the
Blythe dolls. Alex told me that if I wanted anything, I
could ask her and she'd get it
for me.
I finally came home to NJ and drove up to Sandi's to see her new
apartment....amazing. And we found a
Rita's Water Ice place near the apartment!!! I thought they only had
Rita's down the shore and in PA.
Now,
My baby Cleo!
Sam, aka the cutest cousin ever.
Sam and I walking back from Central Park
A tuckered out Sam...Mommy and Baby? HA.
Irwin Ferdinand, the elephant I got at the Book Expo with some marketing book entitled, "Bagging the Elephant"
All in all, BEST WEEKEND EVER.
