-Summary: When nosy teammates come into play. NejiSaku.
-Warnings/Comments:
It feels like the NejiSaku fandom spirit has been rather subdued lately and so the lovely Cashew Nuts and I thought that maybe a couple of challenges to stimulate people wouldn’t go amiss. Hence, this mini-fic to show our good faith, based on five themes that I chose at random from this challenge list we compiled! (If anyone would like a challenge, contact me! I’m easy to get ahold of, I swear!)
Done in less than an hour with a couple of minutes chucked in on the sideline for the editing. 'Ware the italics abuse. Please enjoy, and don’t hesitate to point out what I could have done better!

Misinformed by lilmisssushi
“You know, Neji, you’re really uninspired,” Sakura remarked brightly as she cluttered about his hospital room, neatening up here, placing a fresh jug of water there. She threw open the windows and shutters to let the sunlight filter through, ignoring the scowl that instantly formed on the Hyuuga’s face.
He continued to stare stonily at the back of her head, refusing to take the bait. Letting his eyes slip shut, he reclined back on his newly fluffed pillows and crossed his arms, feigning the impression of disinterest.
His pink-haired companion was not put off.
“I have to say, though, you’re one of the most dedicated shinobi I’ve seen yet. Surely there must be another way to get my attention?”
She sat down lightly at the edge of his bed, eschewing the nearby plastic chair and thus demanding his immediate awareness. Tapping her feet lightly in time to some unknown rhythm in her head, she gave him an arch look.
“Well now, here I am. How may I be of service?”
He snapped.
“Haruno, what the hell are you talking about?”
She mock-sighed and proceeded to stretch gracefully, lithe and like a cat that had gotten at its cream.
“Now now Neji, no need to be so modest. You’re not really injured enough to warrant a hospital bed. We both know the real reason you’re here.”
“And what, pray tell, is that?” he intoned scathingly, but not without a hint of genuine confusion and curiosity hidden in his carefully bland tone. She smiled.
“Yesterday Tenten informed me that a certain Byakugan-wielder has been distracted as of late, for reasons unknown, and keeps getting injured while sparring with her. She also told me that she’d gotten sick of beating his ass into the ground and so decided to pry his tongue loose one night to find out what was bothering him, through clever use of alcohol. Which was how she managed to extract highly…interesting information from her normally stoic teammate. Blackmail material, to be sure.” She leaned close and he could see a slight grin playing at the corner of her lips. “Do you, by any chance, know what might have passed this person’s lips?”
Witch. I’ll get you Tenten.
Resolutely, he stood his ground.
“No.”
A tinkling laugh. “Mmm. Are you sure, Neji-kun?”
Dammit. She’s onto me.
“Yes,” he said emphatically. She smiled easily and poked him in the chest so that he pressed back lightly into the headboard of the bed. He hadn’t been aware that he’d moved.
“Well, that won’t do. Shall I put you out of your misery?”
He glared at the nondescript white hospital wall behind her head, saying nothing.
She knows. She definitely knows.
Finally -
“She said you’re having lady troubles,” a pause. “All you had to do was ask if you needed my advice, you know. There’s no need to injure yourself as an excuse to come here just to see me.” A gleeful laugh. “Hyuuga Neji, lovesick. That’s not something you see everyday!” She shook her head, causing the silky pink strands of her hair to shift marginally in the sun-dappled room. He stared at her.
Is that all?
Sakura had turned away to pour a glass of water for him by this point, and he took the chance to watch her carefully. She was still smiling, but her fingers trembled just slightly as she balanced the glass with her free hand.
Ah. So she didn’t tell you everything…
Decidedly back in his comfort zone, Neji took control of the situation by grabbing her other wrist quickly. She turned to look at him, startled. He was staring straight at her, eyes intense, lush lips curled upwards into a sly smile - and all of a sudden, the room was quite hot, despite the cold beverage she was otherwise gripping.
“That’s not all I’ve been having trouble with.”
His words fell like a pin drop into the still room, and suddenly his face was only an inch away from hers and she could feel his warm breath fanning across her lips. She licked them unconsciously and reddened considerably when she saw his gaze dip downwards, following her movement.
Feeling her mouth dry and her confidence fail on her, she stuttered, “Who’s the lucky girl?” in hopes of getting back on hand with the subject.
His eyes flashed before replying. “Someone we both know…very well.”
“Uhh?” For the second time that day, she felt her usual calm and wit ditch her completely, and she hadn’t a clue why. “A little more detail, please? And how exactly do I help?”
“Maybe dinner with you…would be beneficial. To these…troubles of mine.”
He placed a finger under her chin, rested a callused thumb near her quickening pulse.
“Maybe,” he breathed silkily, “just your presence would be enough. To make this… ‘lovesickness’…go away.”
Yep, Sakura decided, entirely absorbed in his eyes as he leaned towards her, dinner would definitely do them both a world of good -
And suddenly there was an enormous crash as the Green Beast of Konoha whirled into the room, the door banging open and causing Sakura to lose her grip on the glass of water she had still been holding in the melee. It fell in slow-motion towards the ground, shattering into a gazillion different pieces that caught the light and caused Lee to pause in his exuberant greetings by the door.
For once, Lee took an observant glance about the room’s occupants, from Sakura to Neji and their closeness on the bed, then back to Sakura and the shattered glass by her feet. He took an uncertain step towards her, then evidently thought better of it and turned on his heel, leaving, with an apology for interrupting (“I’m SO sorry for barging in your private time with Neji-san, Sakura-san! Please continue with what you were doing!”), spoken over his shoulder.
Once Lee was gone, Sakura could feel a flush moving up her neck and across her cheeks, so she quickly bent her head to clean up the mess. She could still feel Neji’s eyes on her and the warmth in his gaze. In her haste, though, she nicked her finger on a particularly large shard which caused her to hiss under a sharp intake of breath.
Behind her, Neji shifted, concerned, and placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Sakura. Let me see.”
Turning, she offered her hand for his perusal and he looked at her disapprovingly before bending his head to touch the cut with his lips. Her widened eyes at his gesture caused his smirk to grow wider.
Then, he resumed their conversation from before as if they’d never stopped.
“Meet me tonight at seven, Haruno. Maybe, if you're lucky, I’ll even cook.”

Thank you Tenten.
