I also broke down and watched the first season of "Game of Thrones." My biggest takeaway was, "Why do they keep making those women take off their clothes?" Watching TV shouldn't make one feel like showering, but as we descend farther into wickedness, I don't see that changing soon.

They also make the men take off their clothes. It is not quite equal-opportunity exploitation, but I appreciate that they're trying. Game of Thrones isn't particularly good, but I keep watching it for lack of anything better to do.

GoT kind of sucked me in at the end, largely thanks to some really nice acting, I think. Emilia Clarke was kind of a revelation.
I watched the first season of "Girls," too, and I think I'm done with that. It showed some promise, but if you're going to try to make your actors talk like they're in a Woody Allen movie, then you have to be funnier. It made me laugh a few times, anyway.
After watching the second season of "The Walking Dead," I've confirmed that it's just like candy corn--sweet while you eat it, but absolutely insubstantial. Good fun, though.

Really, Emilia Clarke? She's very pretty, but her character has one of the least interesting arcs on the show. I hope that the show will stick to the books and eventually hit the more complex end of her story arc, where she learns that being the Nice White Lady Saving the Brown People is highly problematic. George R. R. Martin goes out of his way to make sure that no good deed goes unpunished in his world.
I tried to make it through an episode of "Girls," but it turns out that I don't care about the characters even the tiniest bit. I admire whatshername's commitment to making herself unlikable, but I don't feel compelled to watch it happen. Not that anything I'm actually watching is that much more compelling. Downtown Abbey and Boardwalk Empire exist mostly to showcase beautiful clothes.

"Girls"--exactly. The only character I liked at all was Shoshana, and that had more to do with performance than writing. (Did we ever talk about "The L Word?" Such good acting in service of such shit writing, a real shame. My feelings about that show have changed over time from so disappointing to As you know, I stopped watching DA during the 2nd season. The timeline issues alone were bad enough to turn me off, but it also became like "Sisters." Remember that show? Nothing had any emotional resonace at all. If a show doesn't transcend play-acting, why bother? "Boadwalk Empire" just doesn't seem like something I'd like, even though I love Buscemi. I might give it a try someday. Honestly, I guess I should watch "Breaking Bad." I saw the first season, anyway. I don't really fee the need to watch the rest ( ... )
