Charitable Funding- Where did the Katrina $ go?

Where did Katrina money go? What's been done in NOLA?
As someone who spent 14 years in the non-profit industry, I am begging people to NOT give to organizations such as American Red Cross, United Way and Salvation Army. I'm sure you are wondering why...well, these are the three RICHEST non-profits in the US and three of the most fiscally irresponsible. All have gotten in trouble with their donors and the IRS (just google it) and are notorius for moving funds around as it suits them and apologizing later.

Where should you give money to? Grass roots and reputable large organizations that spend just about every dime they take in on helping the people they serve. With CEO's and Presidents who get their hands dirty. I have worked for large hospitals such as City of Hope and National Jewish Medial and Research Center, both of which are the best at what they do and BOTH hold to their missions. With small organizations that I love such as Filters for Families (http://www.filtersforfamilies.org), they NEED your money. The big three listed above have so much money, that they can exist off of their interest.

How do I find out about what charities are reputable? Well, word of mouth and sites such as http://www.charitynavigator.org, http://www.give.org, and http://www.charityck.org. Also check here to learn more about grass roots orgs: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20050919/howard2.

So, my original question...what's being done in NOLA. Just watch shows like Anthony Bourdain's NOLA show on the Travel Channel.
