Feminism: double standards regarding sexuality and porn

Jul 07, 2008 20:34

Yes, I'm a feminist. No, I'm not maniacal about it. Feminism is about choice and allowing others to make their own choices about what they do with their lives. That was the whole point of "the movement," opening up a world of choice for women. Feminism IS NOT about making every man you come across pay for the "ills of patriarchy." Ladies, I hear you talk and you are probably going to hate me for this (oh well, I'll get over it)...we are just as bad IF NOT worse than men when it comes to the realm of sexuality and how we talk about it.

If you know me well and know what I do (sex toys and porn), you know that I am an extremely sex positive person. My belief is that sexuality is human nature and that what someone (male or female) does with their own body is their business. If you want to take your clothes off for a living, by all means do so and don't be surprised if I watch. If you want to get naked at a party, feel free and don't be surprised if I look.

HOWEVER, I am a bit tired of those who seem to think that looking and admiring nudity (especially if YOU are putting it out there) is somehow deviant and pervy. In particular, those who perpetuate a double standard: it's okay if women admire me, but the second a man does he is somehow in the wrong. These are some of the same people who when I get topless- of course I NEVER do that, we are just speaking hypothetically ;)- get all giddy and shit and then make my boobs the topic of conversation and attention. Why is that okay to do because you are a woman, but the second a man does it to me or you it becomes an issue?

I'm also tired of defending the porn side of my business and being told that the pornographic movies I have and link to are "degrading to women." How about you crack open your brain and learn a bit about the overall realities of the business before you open your mouth?

Women are the stars. Women make the big money. It's men in the porn industry who are essentially props. They are used for their dicks and nothing more. If anything, it's the men in porn who are getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop. Yes, I understand that there are some seedy aspects of porn. There are some instances where younger women are taken advantage of, etc. However, those instances are now in the minority.

I came across this a while back and know that this writer says it better than I do:

So, go forth and get your freak on and get over yourself.
