RSS Hell or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Domain Registration

Mar 14, 2006 01:43

So, some time ago I decided I needed to learn exactly what all this talk of 'RSS' was all about. Preliminary research suggested something I would like. A lot. So, today, after laundry, I began my quest for information.

And lo! LOOK at what I found... or rather, don't bother. My plan was to build a mecha of information for myself. Ala warrenellis.com. Something I could spend some time setting up and then, essentially, sitback and enjoy. I figured "I got webspace with telus. they'll hook me up with the space i need for the aggregator."

Oh, how wrong I was. EVERYTHING I need for the aggregator is there. FTP access. the space. BUT... they don't support php or mySQL. two essentials, as you need an internet database.

Now, this is ironic, as I'd been throwing around the idea of Raisinvine around for a long time. (for gaming - the online character, influence, news and experience database. ph3ar my geekery). and knew that I needed to buy space from a good host or get my own server to do this... The fact that I *really* wanted my own server to run it was what stopped me. The more I've been looking, though, the more I've come to the idea that I don't need it on my own server. Infact, the problems that come from managing the server yourself flatly aren't worth the hassle.

So, now, I will begin shopping for servers and domain name registrations... I'm now taking suggestions for any good domain names.... maybe flawedmechanics.org? set.net? (haha)...

anyway, it is growing late for me, considering my lovely plans for tomorrow (wouldn't YOU all like to know!) and I'm not tired... There MIGHT be fiction here tonight. We'll see.
