"Hello, Colby, may I help you?" as Alan opened the door, finding a fidgeting Colby on his doorstep.
"Hi, Mr Eppes."
"Alan, please."
"Alan it is then, Mr Eppes. Humm..."
Alan smiled at Colby's uneasiness. "What's bringing you here, son? If you're looking for my boys, they are not here."
"No, I actually came to talk to you," Colby added, avoiding Alan's gaze.
"You're worrying me. Did something happen to Don?" Alan frowned.
"No! I'm sorry; I didn't mean to worry you. May we sit somewhere to talk? I have a question."
"Sure, come in."
He led Colby to the kitchen and fixed them tea."So, what did you want to talk about?" He asked, seeing Colby fidget on his seat.
"I wanted to ask you, because, well, I've... Uh..."
"You've been seeing Charlie for a while and?" Filling Colby's blanks, seeing the young man was struggling with his speech.
Colby gaped at him, "You knew?"
"Well, you kids aren't exactly subtle when you moon at each other during diners."
Colby blushed profusely. “Well, hum…”
“I see you’ve a very developed speech today, son.” Alan smirked, making Colby blushed even more. Alan was enjoying this a bit too much, Colby thought. “C’mon, what did you wanna ask?”
“Iwantedtoaskthepermissiontomarryyourson.” Colby mumbled rapidly.
“Come again?”
“I wanted to ask you the permission to marry your son, sir. Alan. Sir,” Colby finally blurted.
“See, I knew you could do it. Of course you can marry him, son. Pending his decision, anyway, welcome to the family.”
Colby got up to shake Alan hand and ended up in a tight fatherly hug. He had forgotten how good it was to have a dad.
