Stolen from shanachie_quill

The BBC apparently believes most people will have only read 6 of the 100 books here: BOLD THE ONES YOU’VE READ!

So far, I've read only 8 of the list but I've read other books from some author here. The fact that I read mainly French classics at school didn't help

100 books you should have read )

16 The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien (and I’ll never read LOTR for that)

LOL I wish I'd had that much sense. I read the first book in the LOTR series alright but the second was murderous. It sat untouched for over a year before I simply forced myself to read a chapter every night just to get it finished (and I refuse to ever touch the third one)

18 Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger (I need to buy it cause I’ve been wanting to read it for a while)

I'm in the minority on this one (and funnily, was just discussing this book somewhere else later and basically got told that my opinion of it was wrong LOL), but I think it's a total waste of time, too. lol

There are so many books on this list that I've started to read and just not bothered with cause I hated the writing/story/etc. Though there are a handful of ones I thought were great, a lot of these just seem overrated to me.

Ugh, I can't edit my comment but this: and funnily, was just discussing this book somewhere else later

I mean to say I was discussing it somewhere else yesterday. I have nooo idea why I said LATER. lol

LOL! Yeah, I was finding the sentence funny... You're a psychic maybe...

Most of the books on this list are classics, and most of the classics are in general never-ending descriptions... I think I managed to cheat my teachers 2/3 of the time I had to read them. They made me read The Hobbit to young. It wasn't my scene at all and almost disgusted me for life for fantasy books and stuff like that... I'm still reluctant to open them...

And I can't help but mostly love thrillers... What kind of books do you like?

Oh btw seeing your icon, I was thinking about you earlier cause JM is in Dark Blue (2 eps) this evening ;-)

You're a psychic maybe...

OMG. I knew you were going to say that! ;)

I'm really not a fan of most classics for that exact reason. I just find it really mind-numbing to be reading endless pages of descriptions of social customs. Does nothing for me. I'm not a big fan of sci-fi or fantasy in any form... there are definitely a handful of exceptions, but I usually find them so cheesy and badly written. And all those weird universes and made up things just annoy me, they always seem so lame. I need that sort of stuff to be grounded in our world for it to work, like His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. I loooove those books!

I read a lot of different stuff, I'm not really sure what category they'd be in. I tend to like stuff about day-to-day type people and such. I've become a super picky reader as I get older though cause I seem to come across so many books that are just so badly written and I just cannot be bothered.

ooh, I had heard about that but I've not seen them! I am soooo behind on watching stuff though!

You've still read more than the 6 BBC seems to think people have read.

There was a 500 books you should read before you die or something like that on my English list. I've read like...70 of them? Something like that. I always love that War and Peace makes every list--hell Cliff Notes anyone?

What's your real taste in books? Any advices?

LOL sorry.

Um I read scifi and fantasy a lot. I have no idea what to recommend since I don't know what you can get your hands on over there.

Hmmm... Those things always make me hit myself in the head (not literally) and tell myself I really should read more... and then I forget it. LOL Out of that list, I´`ve read 17 of them ( ... )

24 War and Peace - (Like watching a paint dry...)

LMAO! I'd do like John Sheppard, take it to Atlantis to put me to sleep at night...

I love the HP series

The Lord of the Rings - (killed some spare time when I was in the army)

You really had time to kill! LOL! You stayed 10 years? :p (it's the time I'd spend reading it I think! ^^)

Nope, I was there just one year. When werent in maneuvers or on training camps, we usually had the evenings off. Using the phrase off in the very liberal since, we got off around 5 and the lights out was at ten. Most days we had a chance to go on an evening leave (from 5:30 to 21:30) but were so far away from everything that it wasnt really worth it. It took most of the time to get away and back!

So there was a lot of time. Some people went to the gym, some watched TV, and some read. It took about two weeks to get War & Pace read, but LOTH was quicker to read. Maybe it`s just the authors style. Some auhors books are just easier to read than others, with some books you have read it slowly to understand what the writer is trying to say... LOL

Some authors are just so lost in description that you don't even remember what they were talking about at the beginning of the sentence... 3 pages ago... :p

That's great!

I need to pass my classic-phobia and try some :p

I don't have all of these books but it doesn't mean I don't read :p I've got a very loaded bookshelf!
