Everything Has To Start Somewhere
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
Pairing: Hiyoshi/Shinji

Notes: This is a fic that is based from the RP tenipuriu, but not really. It's more an AU from that RP. Let me explain.

In the RP itself, Shinji is with (very happily I might add) Kisarazu Atsushi and Hiyoshi is with Atobe, but meggiebaby81 (who plays Hiyo) and I (I play Shinji, just FYI) were talking and bored late one night, and we came to the logical conclusion that, if Hiyo and Shinji had met before they met their boyfriends, they probably would've ended up together. Within, oh, a *week* of this conversation, I was bored at work and started writing just how that might've happened. Since then, I've written a few others from this, because Meg begs so nicely, but that's another story.

***********

Shinji’s start to college wasn’t exactly going the way he had thought it would.

First, he had to actually come to terms with the fact that Akira was, in fact, gone. It cost Shinji many tears, made harder by the fact that his roommate was one Mukhai Gakuto.

For Shinji, it was hard to wrap his head around, He was used to thinking if any Hyotei students as snobbish and arrogant, and, true, Gakuto had his moments, but for the most part, Shinji found Gakuto to be a good friend, and they grew close rather quickly.

Shinji knew that Gakuto still spent time with many of his old friends, but outside of Atobe-who shared their suite-Shinji had never seen any of them until one day when he walked into a scene that he hoped he was misinterpreting.

Gakuto was on his bed, sprawled over someone that Shinji thought looked familiar, though he wasn’t paying too much attention at that moment. “Ummm…should I come back later, Gakuto?”

Gakuto laughed and smacked the man under him with a pillow before crawling off him. “Shinji! Just in time to watch me beat this pretender.”

“In your dreams, Munchkin,” came the dry response as the other man sat up, letting Shinji finally get a good look at him.

He stared at Shinji, and Shinji felt slightly disconcerted, not able to say anything under that gaze.

Gakuto looked from his friend to Shinji then back. “Shinji, you know Hiyo, right? Hiyoshi Wakashi, Ibu Shinji.”

Hiyoshi nodded. “Yeah, tennis and all.” His stare didn’t abate in the slightest. “Ibu.”

“Hiyoshi….” Shinji went over to his desk just to be able to avoid Hiyoshi’s eyes, but he could still feel Hiyoshi’s stare on his back.

He shivered, but for some reason, Shinji didn’t think that it was out of discomfort.

*~*~*~*~*

The scenario kept repeating, and Shinji could find no rhyme or reason to it.

Hiyoshi was never there at the same times. Sometimes, Shinji would catch Gakuto and Hiyoshi heading out to lunch; other times, it might be and evening study session (which Shinji could never understand, given their different years, programs, and campuses). Every time, though, Shinji would feel that disconcerting stare.

At times, Shinji would meet Hiyoshi’s gaze, and the heat of it would make him flush and turn away. At other times, Hiyoshi would be the one to look away. It confused and intrigued Shinji at the same time, and he had no idea what to do about it.

One thing was clear; Hiyoshi never talked to him after the first. He’d chatter away with Gakuto, but the second that Shinji was drawn into the conversation, he’d clam up so badly that even Gakuto could barely get a civil word out of him at all.

Shinji was left to assume that, for some reason, Hiyoshi really did not like him. It was a shame, he thought, because he himself found Hiyoshi almost painfully attractive and interesting. Shinji knew that Hiyoshi was single-Gakuto had mentioned that fact offhand once-and he wouldn’t mind dating the other man, but the cold silence seemed to indicate to Shinji that Hiyoshi was far from interested in him.

Once he had come to that conclusion, Shinji began finding reasons to leave if he came to his dorm to find Hiyoshi there. Work, library, other plans…Shinji played all of those cards, plus a few more implausible excuses. He decided that he wasn’t going to hang around to be given the cold shoulder by a silent, if extremely sexy, jerk.

Shinji kept up that pattern of avoidance for a good two weeks. Sometimes he found it hard to make himself leave, but he did it for the sake of his sanity. Hiyoshi was slowly driving him mad, and leaving was all he could think to do.

One night found Shinji alone in the suite. He was taking advantage of this quiet to get ahead some in his math class, when a knock on the suite door interrupted him. Curious, Shinji stood from his nest on the couch and answered it, then found himself staring in shocked silence at the person in front of him.

“Hiyoshi,” Shinji broke his silence, licking suddenly dry lips. “Gakuto has a lab tonight.”

“I know.” Shinji blushed a little as he felt Hiyoshi’s gaze focus on his lips. “I came to talk to you.”

“Oh.” Shinji wasn’t sure what to say to that. “Is there something I can help you with, then?”

“Not here.” Hiyoshi’s gaze remained fixed on Shinji. “Come out for coffee with me?”

It was on the tip of Shinji’s tongue to refuse. He couldn’t think of a single reason that Hiyoshi would be asking him anywhere. He wondered if this was Gakuto’s doing, trying to get Hiyoshi and him closer. If that was all it was, Shinji wanted no part of it. Still, it was an excuse to avoid calculus, so…. “Let me grab my keys.”

The walk to the coffeehouse was silent. Usually, Shinji had no problems filling quiet with his voice, but for some reason he was feeling shy and silent. On top of that, Hiyoshi was walking close enough to him so that their hands brushed with each step, making Shinji’s nerves tingle. He had no idea why he was feeling so affected, and he desperately wished that Hiyoshi would just say something and stop sending such mixed signals.

His wishes went unfulfilled, though, as they ordered their drinks and Hiyoshi led them to a fairly secluded table. There they sat, sipping coffee, Hiyoshi staring at Shinji and Shinji staring at the table, until, finally, he looked up, exasperated. “What do you want, Hiyoshi?” he demanded. “All you’ve been doing for weeks is staring at me, and frankly? I’m sick of it, so either say what you want to say, or just leave me alone.”

At that, Hiyoshi’s gaze dropped to the table. “I’m a coward,” he muttered.

Shinji blinked. “Somehow…I think that was the last thing I was expecting to hear. Alright. Just why do you say you’re a coward?”

“Because.” Hiyoshi caught Shinji’s eyes and held them. “I wanted to do this weeks ago.”

“Drink coffee?”

“No. Ask you out.”

Shinji’s jaw dropped some. “You…wanted to ask me out? Like, on a date out?”

“Yes.”

“You have to be joking.”

“Why do you say that?”

“You have to ask?” Shinji shook his head. “Let’s see. Why don’t we start with that you never talk to me!”

“And that is part of the reason I’m a coward. I don’t like admitting that, you know.” Hiyoshi stared into his mug.

“I didn’t think that you did.” Shinji sighed. “Hiyoshi…why didn’t you say anything? I would’ve never guessed that you would’ve been interested in a…date.” He swallowed.

Hiyoshi was quiet for a minute. “It’s…you have this…I don’t know. Presence. And it’s a little intimidating.”

Shinji was reduced to blinking again. “I don’t think that anyone had ever described me as “intimidating” before.”

“Maybe that’s the wrong word. But.” Hiyoshi took a swallow of his coffee. “It’s more like you’re…unapproachable. Like I’d be ruining you by pursuing you.”

Shinji was quiet for a moment…and then he laughed.

Hiyoshi pouted. “I don’t think it’s that funny.”

“But it is!” Shinji managed to get control of himself. “Hiyoshi…you really could’ve just said something. I’m not unapproachable or ruinable.”

“How about interested?” Hiyoshi asked softly.

Shinji smiled and reached out, laying his hand on one of Hiyoshi’s. “I’m interested.”

“You never showed it. You kept running away.”

Shinji’s smile turned into a look of exasperation. “What was I supposed to do? You never said a word to me, and you did nothing but stare. Was I supposed to throw myself at your feet?”

Hiyoshi smiled. “I would not have argued with that turn of events.”

Shinji couldn’t help laughing at that. “You really are something, Hiyoshi.” He sobered. “What made you decide to say something now?”

“I got tired of being a coward.” Hiyoshi wrapped his hand around Shinji’s. “All I knew was that if I kept acting the way I had been, someone would’ve been glad to try and win you. And…the chance to have you was worth the risk of total rejection.”

Shinji blushed deeply. “Well…you’re not getting rejected at all. What now?”

Hiyoshi drained his mug and set it aside. “Now…I ask you on a proper date.”

Shinji looked at Hiyoshi, a small smile on his face. “Is that what you consider asking, Hiyoshi?”

“You’re a brat, do you know that?” Hiyoshi chuckled. “Fine. Will you go out with me, Ibu?”

Shinji pretended to consider the question. “Well…since I agreed to go out with you once, I probably should do it again….”

“Complete brat.” Hiyoshi moved from his seat, taking the chair next to Shinji instead of across from him. “And I think you should be punished for that.”

“Oh?” Shinji raised an eyebrow, deliberately teasing Hiyoshi. “And just how do you plan on punishing me, hmmmm?”

“Like this.” With that, Hiyoshi reached out and grasped Shinji’s chin, holding his head still as his lips covered Shinji’s.

Shinji gasped, then relaxed into the contact, his eyes fluttering shut as he leaned into the kiss, returning the pressure.

Hiyoshi grew bolder under Shinji’s acceptance, one of his hands sliding up into Shinji’s hair, tangling in the soft strands. His tongue flicked out over Shinji’s lips, and, for a moment, Shinji’s lips parted, allowing Hiyoshi the briefest moment of access before pulling back.

“Hiyoshi….” Shinji licked his lips, favoring him with a wicked grin. “Is that really proper behavior for a coffee date?”

“You’re a tease, too, Hiyoshi muttered, unable to look away from Shinji’s lips.

Shinji suppressed a laugh. “I’m all of these things…what are you, Hiyoshi?”

Hiyoshi’s voice and expression were perfectly serious. “Yours.”

A blush spread over Shinji’s face. “Very funny, Hiyoshi.”

“I’m serious.” Hiyoshi’s hand cupped Shinji’s cheek. “I’ve been yours for a few weeks now.”

“I’m not yours, though,” Shinji pointed out. “I can’t say that.”

“Not yet.” Hiyoshi’s entire bearing was confident. “One day, though. You will be mine.”

Shinji flushed. “Confident, aren’t you? Arrogant prick.” His words held no heat, though.

Hiyoshi smirked. “I get what I want, Ibu, and I want you.”

“You want me, and you can’t even use my given name.” Shinji tsked, grinning.

Hiyo’s smirk grew wicked. “What makes you think that I haven’t been using your name? In the middle of the night, the shower….”

“Hiyoshi!” Shinji blushed bright red, squirming a little in his seat. “Do-did you-I didn’t need to know that!”

“Shinji.” Hiyoshi’s fingers covered Shinji’s mouth. “I’m teasing you, now. If I do or not…that’s for me to know and you to discover later.”

An impish smile spread over Shinji’s face. “Teasing, were you?” he murmured against Hiyoshi’s fingers, just before his tongue flicked out over them, taking one of Hiyoshi’s fingers in his mouth to suck gently.

Red washed over Hiyoshi’s face. And he couldn’t suppress a quiet moan. “Now who’s teasing?” he managed, pulling his fingers from Shinji’s mouth reluctantly. “You have no idea what I want to do right now.”

“I have a few ideas.” Shinji stood and looked down at Hiyoshi. “You want to walk be back to my dorm, kiss me goodnight, then go back to your campus.”

Hiyoshi scowled a little. “I was thinking more of walking you back to your dorm, stripping you naked, pushing you to your knees, fucking that mouth of yours with my cock, then tossing you facedown on the bed and pounding your tight ass.” He sat back, almost eagerly anticipating Shinji’s response.

Shinji was frozen in place for several moments. Then he looked down at Hiyoshi with an angry glare and stormed out without another word.

Hiyoshi stared after Shinji for a moment before scrambling after him. “Shinji!”

“Stuff it, Hiyoshi,” Shinji almost snarled, refusing to look anywhere but straight ahead.

“What did I say?” Hiyoshi asked, thoroughly confused.

Shinji kept glaring at nothing in particular. “If that’s all you want from me, then go fuck yourself! I’m not a cheap lay, and I don’t jump into bed with anyone!” He turned his glare onto Hiyoshi. “So go find someone else if that’s all you want!”

“Shinji!” Hiyoshi didn’t even bother trying to keep the fear out of his voice. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean that’s all I wanted! You’re hot and I want you, but I want all of you, not just your body.” He reached out and grabbed Shinji’s arm, pulling him to a stop.

Shinji studied Hiyoshi’s face carefully. “We’ll see.”

“Are you still going to go out with me?” Hiyoshi looked at Shinji with almost soulful eyes.

“Well…fine. One more chance.” Shinji’s lips curved into a soft smile almost in spite of himself. “Bout you’re going to have to work if you want to prove that you’re worth more than some kisses.”

“I’ll be happy with just the kisses.” Hiyoshi grinned. “Yes, sir.”

“Dork.” Shinji laughed as he headed up the stairs, finally relaxing some.

“For you, anything.”

Shinji blushed at the sincerity in Hiyoshi’s voice. “That’s a lot to promise, Hiyoshi.”

“Wakashi.”

Shinji blinked. “Excuse me?”

“Call me Wakashi. I don’t want the man who I am sweeping off his feet to be calling me by my family name.”

“You seem so sure that I’m going to be swept.” Shinji dug his keys out of his pocket, but hesitated, not ready to unlock the door and go in just yet.

“You will be. You’re being swept now.” Hiyoshi reached out to play with a lock of Shinji’s hair.

“Maybe.” Shinji couldn’t help leaning into Hiyoshi’s hand.

“Shinji…can I kiss you goodnight?” Hiyoshi’s breath caught a little, waiting for the answer.

When it came, it was everything that Hiyoshi could’ve hoped for. “Please…Wakashi.”

Hiyoshi’s lips on Shinji’s were gentle, yet claiming. His arms wrapped around Shinji, pulling the other man against him as he sweetly devoured Shinji’s mouth, not breaking the contact until they were both desperate for air.

When Hiyoshi pulled away, Shinji was left breathless and panting, trembling under the force of the kiss. “Wakashi….”

Hiyoshi smiled and brushed a chaste kiss across Shinji’s lips. “Sweet dreams, Shinji.”

“I…I don’t think I’m going to be able to have anything but now.” Shinji’s eyes were wide and dazed. “I’m…just going to go inside now….”

“I want to follow you…but I respect you.” Hiyoshi moved away from Shinji, back towards the stairs.

“Thank you,” Shinji murmured, puling himself back together enough to work the lock. “Be careful going back.”

Hiyoshi nodded. “I will. And I’ll call you tomorrow.” He turned and headed into the stairwell. “Good night, Shinji.”

Shinji made it into his suite and onto his bed almost on autopilot. “What am I getting into?” he asked himself, but he had no answer, not one he was ready to hear.

Because, in the back of his mind, Shinji knew exactly what he was getting into. Love.
