SadieCabaret Interview

1. What house was/is your favorite to live in and why?
Until a couple of months ago I would have said the Davis house on Muir Woods, because it really made me happy. I designed and built it and lived there in much content. I loved the light (rich natural warm sunlight) and the colors (the flowers and colors in the neighborhood, and on/in the house), and all the good times I had there.
But--five years after leaving that house--I've just moved into a new wonderful house. It has amazing views, and is very dramatic (high ceilings; lots of windows and skylights, and a REALLY good floorplan, thanks to the teamwork with Steven and some comments from family at the early stages of design). This house is waiting to fulfill the potential of all the family and friends that will visit us here, and of our new life in this beautiful area.
So--I live for the present, and this house is great. Come one and all to visit us!

2. When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?
I don't know about "little", but I spent most of my youth wanting to be a horse trainer, or something in that vein. I dreamed of competing in 3-day events (day 1 = cross-country jumping; day 2 = dressage; day 3 = stadium jumping), but it was pretty far out of reach--partly because of not being rich, as it would have been incredibly expensive to do that. Looking back, I think it was good that I got a taste of it (riding in horse shows including over jumps) but didn't make it a career. The liberal arts are much more satisfying in the long run.

3. Now what do you want to be when you grow up?
When I get really old I want to be seen as a Wise Woman--An Earth Mother--who even in physical decline provides nurturing to the universe. (I want my children and grandchildren--if any--to still want to hang out with me.)

4. If you were going to choreograph a piece what music would you use and why?
I have been spending a lot of time thinking about this (in the car, while weedeating the lawn, etc.) and currently am working on "mental choreography" to Sophie B. Hawkins' "Did We Not Choose Each Other" from the Whaler disc. I like the changes that occur in the music as it progresses, and the passionate, joyous flow of the song. I can see it build through the intro to the "body" of the song to the overlapping "rounds" at the end. It would be fun to do it as a group piece, or as a solo with other dancers as more of a "Greek chorus" maintaining the percussion threads as the soloist works with the flow of the music.

5. What type of art (dance, writing, visual arts, music, etc.) is your current priority andy why?
Ohhhh! Don't make me choose! I want 'em all!
I want to keep up with dance because I love it and I can bond with Diane from afar and because I want to stay flexible (both versions of the word), and I have internalized it as a means of expression. I want to write because I have at least two novels screaming to be written (when I turn off Sophie B. Hawkins they get the upper hand). I want to draw and paint because I love it and have been away so long. And I love music, but that I can indulge because I can listen pretty much any time. Interestingly, this area is surprisingly supportive of all of the above. I just finished a major period of my life (the "Seattle years") and am starting a new life much closer to land's end. It's up to me to leverage the opportunities here to fulfull all of the above goals. The opportunity is there.
