today while over at a friend's house in the hills, we spotted a baby wild finch that looked like it had fallen from the nest, or was injured or something. when we attempted to catch it, it was def. not skilled at flying (yet) and ended up getting trapped under her woodpile. we rescued it from there and it appeared fine (although crawling with mites- itchy!
the dad finch was manic and hopping about calling for it, and i wanted to get up high since it was not a skilled flyer yet so it had a chance to make it back to the nest.
i climbed to the top of a ladder with the poor stunned thing ("OMG i am about to be eaten for sure") and placed it on top of a high fence. it sat there in a daze as i called back to papa finch so he would see baby. i was worried about it, as it did not move from its frozen stance on top of the fence for a minute.
so i calmly reached for it again, and it flew (thank the gods) into a tree. i think it will be fine. what a first flight adventure it had!
