It helps that I'm not really involved in any fandoms so when I go looking for fic it's usually totally independent of what anybody else might think. In smaller fandoms there are usually people who become famous for being prolific and just being around a lot and friending people etc because it's easy to tell who the good writers are and aren't, but there's also more a sense of camaraderie rather than hierarchy.
When I used to write and upload at fanfiction.net I rated everything M after they banned R-rated stuff. Most of my writing was worth an R rating, but even the stuff that didn't usually ended up M just by default. If I'm posting something on LJ I usually provide descriptive tags rather than a rating because every country has different standards and I don't agree with most of them, so. As a reader, I tend to think R > G because I like serious issues in my fic and I find it hard to believe that something rated G can have depth. This is an irrational blanket statement of course.
I'm a psych geek and stats ties into that, so I like seeing where this is going.
but there's also more a sense of camaraderie Yes I agree. My first fandom was a small one, and we weren't picky at all.
If I'm posting something on LJ I usually provide descriptive tags rather than a rating That's what I have been trying to do. The reason is that I always have problem rating my own work.
I find this poll quite informative, and I hope it's helpful to you too! :-)
