This is the welcome speech that my mom gave at the wedding...
December 16, 2006
Welcome ladies and gentlemen. My name is Shayna Hollander and I have the privilege of being Lillian’s mother and of thanking all of you for being here to celebrate Lillian and Kristen’s love for one another.
It became clear to me soon after her birth that Lillian was not an ordinary baby. Although she met all the typical physical milestones at the usual times, she was talking, in complete sentences, at nine months of age. There was no doubt that she was special when she uttered the words, “I am a dog.” Her Grandma Anne was concerned. As a dog-lover, I was delighted. Lillian’s wonderfully quirky sense of humor manifested itself to me then. No one, with the exception of her brother, Correll, can reduce me to tears of laughter with more ease and apparent delight. It was always my hope that Lillian would find that wonderful person who could make her laugh the same way. Thank you, Kristen, for being that person. You definitely belong in the Hollander family and I am so happy that you are now my daughter, too.
In Kristen, Lillian has found a best friend, kindred spirit, and true love. In the words of Maya Angelou, “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, and penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.”
Let us all raise our glasses to Lillian and Kristen.
“When a child finds true love, her mother finds true joy. Here's to your joy and mine, from this day forward.”
I wish I had my brother's speech, but I'm pretty sure he didn't write it down. It ended with a toast:
"May your health be healthy,
may your wealth be wealthy,
may your love be true.
Lillian and Kristen, here's to you!"
