Artificial Daylight

There was no day and no night aboard the TARDIS. No clocks that could be used to divide time into hours and minutes and seconds; because the TARDIS was moving through time, time did not pass through the TARDIS.

Rose had trouble with it. She was used to a sun and a moon and her mother dictating her sleeping patterns. It was difficult to adjust.

Once, shortly after she had first come on board, she had realised that she couldn't actually remember the last time she had slept. Then going to her room, she had slept for what the Doctor insisted was two days. She didn't believe him. Not really.

After that she noticed that at certain times the TARDIS lighting would dim slightly, and the Doctor would look at her with a smile on his lips, as she would fight the beginnings of a yawn. She'd find herself walking to her room without really intending to, then sleeping for a good few hours, only waking when the lights began to shine a little brighter; like a slow sunrise. Sometimes she thought she could almost hear birdsong.

He never told her that he was running a day and night program with the lighting, and when Rose asked him about it, he denied it to her face; insisting that it had always been like that -- she just hadn't noticed.

Rose had let him get away with the lie, and loved him all the more for it.
