Absent Fathers
Her name was Alice. She had long brown hair and brown eyes and she didn't make friends easily.
She had a mother, a grandmother and a grandfather -- but no father. Her mother had not told him that she was pregnant, and he'd left.
She was different. Her mother had explained the reason when she had been very small and Alice had nodded in quiet acceptance. It was just a secret to keep, that was all. She was good at keeping secrets; she had no one to tell.
Of course as she got older people began to notice that there was something a little strange about her. But they never guessed and she never told.
It was nothing you could put your finger on, nothing that you could see, but it was there all the same. The longer you spent in her company the more you became aware of it. Even if you didn't know what it was.
At eight years of age she was a star pupil. Her mind was quick and lively. She craved information, fed on it. First hand up in the air -- always. At first her teachers puffed out their chests with pride at the child who wanted to learn, to listen, to know. But soon enough they realised that the more questions she asked, the fewer answers they had. She made them look stupid and that just wouldn't do. It wouldn't do at all. Soon, no matter how she waved her arm in the air, how she begged to be answered, they looked the other way. Alice understood and retreated to her books.
The playground was a waste of time in her opinion; nothing to do but watch the other children play together. They kept their distance while she sat alone on the swings, watching in silence. She studied them as if they were insects. One by one the children would leave; the space around her becoming larger. They didn't like the way she watched them and sooner not later, she'd be alone. She liked it that way.
She was fifteen when her family thought it best that she was removed from school. As money was no object, an educated young man was employed as her tutor. He was fresh faced, wet behind the ears and handsome, clever too - although not as clever as she. No one was, she was beginning to realise that. But Alice liked him, and she liked so few people that her family were in no small way relieved.
He kissed her on her sixteenth birthday. That was the beginning of the end.
She liked the secrecy of it. She liked the flirting, the smiles that no one saw, the briefest caress of fingers. The way her hearts raced.
She wanted more.
A locked room, an old bed, and his body above hers, fast, desperate, hungry. His fingers pushed inside her as he kissed her mouth into silence, swallowing down her cries. Then, he was inside, one easy shove. She hadn't expected it to hurt so much. It went on too long, and she lay there staring up at the ceiling wishing it would be over soon. He kissed her breasts, told her she was beautiful, told her he loved her. She knew he was lying. He began to move faster, wilder. He told her that she was a fantastic fuck. She closed her eyes, not wanting to look at him. He pulled himself out of her with a frustrated groan; half pain half pleasure and shuddered to a climax between her legs.
They did it three more times before she told her mother.
Another three months passed before she told her mother about the baby.
