100 Recipes - #31 Oatmeal Cardamom Cookies

As many of you know, I don't really bake. Neither Jason nor I have much of a sweet tooth and baked goods tend to last a long time1 at our house. For the rare desserts, I tend to either buy stuff or go with fruit and whipped cream2. But the point of this exercise is to get myself to try new things and Alice likes cookies and cardamom is Jason's favorite spice, so when I saw the following on The Amateur Gourmet, I had to try it.

#31 Oatmeal Cardamom Cookies Not only was the recipe fairly simple, but I happened to have everything except the cherries in stock. I really appreciated the AG's notes, especially the one about not actually needing to let the batter sit for six hours. I didn't have parchment3, so I used wax paper, which would have worked better had I trimmed it to the sheet, rather than leaving stray edges to toast and smoke in the oven.4 But after the smoke cleared, the cookies were just fine. Nay, more than fine, they are extremely yummy. Jason has already had three. We agree that despite my doubling the cardamom, it's still not really perceptible, so next time I'd go ahead and quadruple it. But they're still some wicked tasty cookies.

1As in, we eat about half of whatever when it's new and then throw the rest away, sadly moldy, a couple of weeks later.
2I recommend honey-cinnamon whipped cream for a very special seeming, no-work (if you have an electric whisk) dessert. Chestnut liqueur and orange extract are other good additives.
3Note to self: get parchment.
4See, this is why I don't like baking--the pitfalls of making it up as I go along, with my limited experience, are much more major than when working on the stovetop.
